They still matter however nowhere near the level of the Patriots, Red Sox and I dare say even the Bruins.
There are two main reasons for this as other fans have astutely pointed out in this thread (good topic by the way)
1.) Boston has never been a basketball city. Not sure why, but for some reason the sport has always played fourth banana to football, baseball and hockey
2.) Right now, the Celtics just aren't an exciting team. To avid fans like us on Celtics Blog, it's easy to rally behind and/or pick apart everything about the team because we are true fans. But to the casual fan, right now the Celtics just aren't floating anyone's boat and I really don't blame them. Like another fan said, I watch every game and admittedly get bored watching them sometimes.
How could this be remedied?
Well, not much can be done about Beantown not digging hoops BUT if the Celtics acquire another "sexy" name/s (similar to when we got KG/Ray back in '07) and/or draft a projected franchise player, certainly interest will increase.
Unfortunately, right now the "casual" fan plays a vital role in a team's following and for whatever reason the Bruins have become the new "pink hat destination."
But remember, if the Bruins and/or Patriots start losing and the Celts win championships again, that all changes.
As for the Red Sox, let's not forget their popularity has died down alot since 2007 (it doesn't help when they give up a 9 game wildcard lead in September and follow that with a 69 win season.)
For the record, I am a basketball guy all the way
