Starters

Rajon Rondo - 7-time all star, averages 20/15/6/1 and is in every possible discussion for MVP. He's never left out of the top-2 PGs list and dominates every game. Continues to lead the league in assists every year, even without Pierce/KG thus shutting up the haters.

Avery Bradley - All-NBA Defensive First Team for years and years, universally acclaimed as the top on-ball defender in the league who can cut as well as any player in the league. The perfect yin to Rondo's yang. 15/2/2

Jeff Green - 2-time all star. Known for not just his higlight dunks but deadly three-point shooting. Always a post-up threat on SFs and always able to find room against PFs. Known as the one and only "LeBron stopper" and is right below Durant/LBJ in SFs. 24/7/2/1.5

Jared Sullinger - As diligent a worker as any, he's one of the best young PFs in the league. Averaging 11/11/.7, he uses his bulk to box out those taller than him while sporting a decent jump shot. Limiting his fouls while starting to get blocks.

Fab Melo - One of the top shot-blockers in the NBA, he's a wall. All who enter must pass Fab. Though he lacks an outside game, he boxes out with a motor and brings rebounding to a team severely lacking in it. 3/8/2.6

Bench

Jordan Crawford - Under the tutelage of Jason Terry, he works hard to shed himself of the "bad-shots" tag. A relentless attacker who's deadly from long range, Craw is as unpredicatble as anyone in the league. A serious contender for Sixth Man by averaging 16/5/1 and bringing energy to the bench.

Jason Terry - Fading into the twilight of his career, he brings veteranship to this growing team. By limiting his shots and hitting threes and pullup jumpers with regularity, he might not be the fastest but he still can ball. Though a shadow of his former self, he plays a Derek Fisher-esque role while averaging 8-14/4/1.

Courtney Lee - The quintessential 3-and-D player who can hit the three-ball while imposing his will on opposing SGs and sometimes PGs/SFs. Courtney is in the midst of his prime and playing the best ball of his career while being the perfect role player for the Celtics. 13/1/2

Brandon Bass - After shaking off a relatively poor beginning to his new contract, Bass roudns into his 2011-12 form (Mr. Consistency) and provides scoring off the bench. Though he might not be the fastest player or the best rebounder, he makes the right plays while knocking down his solid midrange J. With the every-so-often putback dunk, he will have big games every so often while averaging 11/6/1/1

An NBA-level C, but cheap. Someone who can get a few boards hopefully [but not likely]

Reserves

Leandrinho Barbosa - Returning from an ACL injury, Barbosa might not be the Sixth Man of the Year he used to be, but he's the best emergency depth player in the league who can explode for 20 points on any given night. Nothing to lose from signing Barbosa who becomes a close friend to Jeff Green.

Mickael Pietrus - After leaving the Celtics for a year, he makes his return as the locker-room jokester. He'll play as a second-string SF most times, but will give way to the new young SF eventually. He has the range to make big threes while coming at a cheap price.

Yes, I'm liking the idea of this run-and-gun team. A much better version of the Houston Rockets, these Celtics will score 130 points a game while only allowing 80. Miami who?
Jeff Green - Top 5 SF

I like the core of Rondo, Green, Bradley, Lee and Sullinger, but

To me you need a big and to get that you either..

A.  Trade Rondo as part of a trade for Horford - That would satisfy the Hawks if they wanted to keep Smith

B.  Gortat for a mix of Bass plus

C.  Get lucky with a FA who really wants to play for you and will take less for a year or so until your cap situation clears up in a year or 2.  (Jefferson, Kaman)

I don't think that either Monroe or Gasol are options since they are under contract for 2 more years after this year.

  • Everyone's excited for the new era.
The only true building blocks we have right now are Rondo and Bradley.  They are two established players in the league who have proven that they can play well together while having elite attributes (passing for Rondo, defense for Bradley).  These are the only two guys who I can safely say will be here in the next couple years once we rebuild.

Jeff Green has the potential to be another piece.  He's proven that he can be a high-level backup on a good team, and has shown flashes of excellence when inserted into the starting lineup.  If he can develop any sort of consistency, he can become a solid starter in the NBA.  That's probably his ceiling.  If he does continue to improve, his contract might finally be tradable, and we could possibly move him in a deal for another player, preferably one who performs and shows up every night.  Green's future in Boston has yet to be determined.

When Danny drafted Sully and Melo, I'm assuming that he intended those two to be assets primarily, and, if trades could not be made, our front court for the future (in 4 or 5 years).  Sully has proven he has an elite skill (rebounding), but unless he can improve defensively, as well as shows signs that he can score more consistently, he's probably better off as a team's first big off the bench.  Melo has shown us next to nothing in his few appearances in the NBA, and I have my doubts that he'll improve to be anything other than an average backup center.  We'll see if he can improve over the next two or three years.

Courtney Lee and Brandon Bass are guys who are great off the bench for good teams because they provide skills that are very helpful.  I don't expect either of these guys to be a part of our rebuild, as they're best suited as supporting pieces on winners, not teams that are rebuilding.  Both are solid trade assets at best, so it might be tough to move them.

Terrence Williams, DJ White, and Jordan Crawford are really just fillers in trades to me.  We've seen what Crawford's done on rebuilding teams before (in Washington), and we've read about Williams' antics in NJ (bad attitude).  White seems like a great eleventh or twelfth guy on a rebuilding team, so maybe we keep him around.  Personally, I wouldn't.

All that being said, here's a realistic view of our team going forward (once Pierce, KG, and Terry either retire/get traded):

*This team does not include draft picks that we make in the future, as it's [dang]-near impossible to predict those.

Rondo
Bradley
Green
Sully
Melo

That's our starting unit.  Depending on how you project the development of these players determines how many games they would win.  In my opinion, this starting unit, along with a mediocre bench (which most rebuilding teams have), wins you probably 35-40 games at most.  Not enough floor-spacing, not big enough, and a lack of shot-creators really hurts this unit.  They could be decent defensively, if only for the brilliance of Bradley picking up guys full-court.

Crawford
Lee
Williams
Bass
White

Let's say no free agents want to come to Boston (which is absolutely realistic).  That leaves us with the players we already have.  This bench is truly awful.  The only above-average defender is Lee, the size is terrible, and I can't see this unit putting very many points up on the board.  When our starting unit goes out, the other team is going to have a field day.

So there, that's our realistic future.  I'm not really surprised that the future looks a little dim, as Danny has currently constructed this team so that it can win now.  By doing that, you have to make sacrifices.  In this case, Danny sacrificed the future.

Development could be a huge factor in whether this team is lottery-bound or early-round fodder in the playoffs.  It really depends on how you view these players.

One last note: Danny Ainge has stones.  That can be good and bad.  We've seen him land two stars in the span of two months, rejuvenating the franchise and landing one championship.  I wouldn't rule out that he could do this again.  If anything, it's realistic to assume that Danny, once the rebuild hits, will be working the phones to make us a contender again, and save us from the mess of a team I showed you above.  Hopefully, he pulls it off.

If KG and PP retire next summer, 2013/2014 team

Rondo/T-Will/Barbosa
Bradley/Courtney Lee/Jordan Crawford
Green/Pietrus
Sullinger/Bass/Wilcox/Dario Saric (overseas)
Darko/Kenny Kadji/Melo

Kenny Kadji hopefully Danny buys a second round pick and gets him, he has little upside but he's probably more polished than Melo. He could go up as Miami makes a good tournament, but I think that's realistic to get him in the second round. Darko is a big if, but he would be the best option out there for the min.

In this scenario, I could see Terry moved for future assets (pick + trade exception) or a big, or future pick + bad contract. Anyone but Rondo/Bradley/Green/Sully/Melo could be moved also. White and Randolph for future 2nd rounders or an LLE type player.

If PP and KG stay another year, then 2014/2015 team:

Rondo/T-Will
Bradley/Lee
Green/
Sully/Saric
Darko/Melo

Lee could be moved, but he's young enough to stay. I think T-Will can stay with the team. Then, the team will have enough money to pick a max FA in 2014 or 2015 (Marc Gasol... please).

A Rondo trade (hope not) could happen here, when he's healthy.

none of you have the guts to trade Rondo for a big?

I'm all for it with the right return, but Al Jefferson is nowhere near losing Rajon Rondo for. He's too much of a defensive liability, and I can see Sully  being just as good as he is in a couple of years time (only far better defensively).

I'd love to get Tyson Chandler personally. I think he's about as close to KG as you will get in terms of being a defensive anchor, plus he's an exceptional rebounder.  Rondo to Chandler would be lop city 2.0

Failing that Josh Smith would be a good fit as well.  His athleticism would go nicely with Rondo, Bradley and Green and he's a shotblocker (can protect the rim). He's also a good good passer, a solid rebounder and a capable 2nd scoing option behind Green.  A frontcourt of Green and Smith would create matchup nightmares on a nightly basis.

Rondo
Bradley
Green
Smith
Gortat

This gives you a nice ballance between offense and defense as well as exceptional athleticism.  As a center you wouldn't need a superstar - you just need a guy who can rebound well and score efficiently in double figures.  I'm thinking maybe a 12/9 guy that shots >50% from the field would do the job just fine.  Ability to block shots at a decent rate would be a bonus, as a second shot blocker to combine with Smith in the front court would make teams think twice before attacking the basket.   Gortat would probably work there.

It might seem unrealistic, but with KG/PP/JT gone by that time, there will be $25M-%30M coming off the books, so getting a duo like that may well be realistically possible.

On the bench we need a pure shooter - someone in the mould of Eddie Houe, Ray Allen, JJ Reddick, Kyle Korver, etc.  Rondo is most efficient when he is able to set gusy up for catch-and-shoot plays (like with Ray Allen).  We tend to take a lot of jump shots when Rondo is out there, so it would be nice to have at least one hgh calibre shooter.

My post PP+KG celtics roster would (realistically) ideally be made up as follows

PG   Rondo
SG   Avery
SF   Green
PF   Sully
C    (mobile, long, athletic center)
6th  ( scoring 2/3, 6'6 +)
7th  ( athletic, long 4)
8th  ( scoring point)
9th  ( stretch 4)
10th ( bench 7')
11th ( journey man 3)

Center
Out of this list the hardest position to fill is obviously starting Center. As others have noted Larry Sanders is an ideal fit. Hopefully (but very unlikely) Melo fills this role. I think he is destine for the 10th man slot. Another great fit if healthy would be Noel, but I dont see the Cs getting him without trading RR. Other options would be Noah (not likely), Dalembert(prob to old) or Robin Lopez.

6th man 2/3
This is a spot where I could see Danny adding a vet to the team. A player like Iguodala ,Kevin Martin, or Aaron Affalo would be a nice fit. This give the team a 3rd guard with size and the ability to move Green to the 4 for a running lineup. Other options would be Deroza or N Young.

7th man 4
When Sully was healthy Doc was using a Bass + Sully combo as the big man lineup with out KG. This was less than idea due to both players lacking the length to contest shots. With centers so hard to obtain I would go with a long 4 as the 3rd big. Ekpe Udoh seems like a good fit for this role.

8th Scoring PG
Barbosa showed the importance of this role earlyier in this season. Though he is not a PG Jordan Crawford may be this player going forward. I also like Larkin the soph from Miami in this role(I see him as JJ Barea in nba)and Seth Curry of Duke.

9th Stretch 4
I think a shooting big man is an invaluable position coming off the bench in today's NBA. I would like to see the Cs draft Ryan Kelly for this role. I think he will be comparable to Matt Bonnor.

10th 7'
Much like Collins was brought in this year its important to have a big body on the bench. If Fab doesn't develop like I hope he does than this becomes his spot. If not its a good spot to have an older vet like collins.

11th Journey man 3
This is another spot to have an older vet at. This player serves as insurance if green or the 6th man goes down. Ex Pietrus, Barnes, G Forbes

to recap

PG   ROndo
SG   Avery
SF   Green
PF   Sully
C    Sanders
6th  Afflalo
7th  Udoh
8th  Crawford
9th  Kelly
10th Melo
11th Pietrus

Is not sure if Dany will built the team around Rondo or not. Igudala will be a great replacment for PP and Howard/Cousins for KG. But I am sure that KG and PP will be Cs for at least 2 seasons.

After 2-3 years the start-line up would be

Rondo
AB
Igudala
Green
Howard/Cousins

If Rondo will be traded

Point Guard?
AB
???
Green
???

I think it is fair to ask people what their dream line up is, subject to realistic salary cap limitations and expectations of who is available in a trade.

Adding players like Gortat, Josh McRoberts and Gerald Henderson seem to be a positive move to realistically compete. Josh Smith is an excellent prospect but he would limit Danny's/team's purse. Instead go for Corey Brewer.

Rondo/Henderson/Green/Sully/Gortat

Bradley/JCrawford/Brewer/McRoberts/DJWhite

Fab/TWill/FAs and Draftees
