Backups and long term projects. Olynyk(rotational) and Withey(3rd stinger/4th big) can make it as backups. Isaiah Austin is a unique bang or bust type prospect. Gobert and Nogueira are long term projects who probably don't make it to a second NBA contract.
Austin could be KG-lite, or he could be Jonathan Bender...or anything in between.

we're not going to draft a big, in a super weak draft, that 20 other teams passed on.

fab has the same measurement as austin, as well as 30 more lbs of muscle mass.

austin would be worse than fab melo. we're drafting  a nice guard.

Austin's still a teenager and probably will be quite a bit better than Melo once he matures.

DraftExpress has centers--and generally quite tall ones--going for 12 of the first 33 picks in the draft.  Where the draft appears to be weak is in PF and somewhat in PG.

I think it's as likely as not that the C's take a center.  Last year at this time people were still hoping and expecting that 3J would become part of the team's next generation core.

If Danny keeps the pick, he'll take BPA as usual.  hopefully at that point, it's a PF or C.  even a SF to groom behind PP and Green next year wouldn't be a bad idea.

The bigs in this draft just aren't worth getting excited about.   Best case scenario is that they pan out to be good backup centers.  I just don't see a very good starter in the bunch.  of the bunch that could realistically be around when the C's pick, Olynyk might make the most sense in that he offers the offensive skillset Melo is lacking.  They could make a serviceable tandem in 2-3 years.

No to austin for me also. I think he has a slight left eye issue on top of being ultra skinny. He is JJJ skinny and will need to stay at least till junior or senior season and at least build up his body. Maybe then he will be a finished product

right now, just too much risk and sour taste left in the mouth after drafting JJJ

Olynyk reminds me of Christian Laettner in college.  He's pretty mobile and fluid for a big and can score in all three depths of the floor but but he's not explosive and lacks typical length for his position.  After checking out Laettner's stats, he had a better professional career than I thought.

Bump

A kid I would like to add to this list is Steven Adams.

Quote
Adams was a surprise entry as many felt he needed more time in college to develop his feel for the game and post skills. Adams is not a lock for the first round as some question how much he will improve as well as his overall athleticism. He lacks a great feel for the game and will be a long term project, but his size, strength and desire should be enough to grab a spot in the 20s.
