We’re not playing our third-string bigs anyways (see White, DJ).Therefore, I would prefer to use that roster spot on a kid who by all accounts, has a world of talent, then on a NBA cast-off like Shavlik Randolph.

my first TP goes to this guy. I have to agree with this here. Shavlik has bounced around more than Tyler and is much older. If we only have a year or 2 left of KG, I think a young big like Tyler can definately benefit.

I think the playoff eligible question is relevant.  Right now, with Rondo and Sullinger hurt, both White and Randolph are on the 12 man roster.

If we replace Randolph with Jeremy Tyler, that would likely mean that Melo becomes the 12th man during the playoffs.

Sure, you hope the 12th man doesn't see much if any time during the playoffs there would have to be a real compelling reason to get Tyler and force us to use Melo.

Randolph and White are not on the roster for playoff action.

Their purpose is to decrease the minutes of the rotation bigs down the stretch to keep those other guys fresh for the playoffs.

If Tyler can do the same thing, I have no problem bringing him in. If he can't, wait until the last week of the regular season to sign him.

I wouldnt mind replacing him with Randolph I guess...

And I dont get the point being made that Randolph has shown he can play in the NBA.

Randolph has 5 NBA seasons under his belt and hasnt even played in 100 games. Playing 95 games in his career while averagine 8 minutes a game in those 95 games doesnt show me anything, especially when he has been bounced out of the NBA for the last two seasons.

Heck in just two season Tyler has seen 636 NBA minutes where Randolph in 5 years has seen only 783.

He wouldn't be eligible for the playoffs, since he was waived after March 1, so it would be a waste of a roster spot to sign him.

Waste of roster spot? So, he's not playoff eligible. Big deal. Are you expecting the 12th man off the bench to get minutes in the playoffs?. If the 12th man on the bench (Randolph) can’t get minutes against Philadelphia, why would he get minutes in the playoffs.

Bigs in foul trouble against a team where smallball is not that good of an option.  A game gets chippy and KG does something that leads to a one-game suspension.  Garbage minutes in a blowout so that your regular rotation players don't run a small risk of injury.

It's also possible that White and Randolph prove themselves useful enough that you want to give them minutes.

It's smart to be prepared for contingencies that might but are not guaranteed to come up.  It's the opposite of smart to rely on the best-case scenario occurring.

We have 15 players

But two of those players are only on 10 day contracts that will run out in the next week.

What an utterly selfish move by the Hawks waiving him at this point after the deadline.  I bet that will NOT play well with his agent and could have ramifications down the road IF his agent represents more meaningful players.

I agree with many that we should sign him and develop him.  He seems to have matured and grown up.  I did a LOT of research on him in that draft and loved him then!!!

His agent is pretty much a nobody.

After reading your post I was reminded of that ageless idiom “If ifs and buts were candy and nuts we'd all have a merry Christmas.” Yes, I suppose our bigs could get in foul trouble, or get suspended, or fall ill, or get held-up in traffic on the way to the garden, or any other concoction you can think up.

However, I am not now, nor will I ever be comfortable with any scenario in which DJ White or Shavlik Randolph play minutes of consequence in the playoffs.  As one poster noted, if that were to happen, we’ve already lost. Let’s take a flyer on our future instead.

Finally, I know Jeremy Tyler is a big guy, but I believe we’d only need one roster spot for him, not two. Thus, if we “need” a third-string big to play in playoffs, for whatever reason, we’ll have one available.

Bring back big man coach Clifford Ray to mold Jeremy Tyler into Kendrick Perkins 2.0! What ever happened to Cliff?

In all seriousness, if you had the chance to bring in Greg Oden or Jeremy Tyler this summer (both being question marks with upside), what would you do?

Minutes played in the NBA doesn't really matter.  Shavlik played pretty well in the NBA before being derailed by injuries.  He's far superior at rebounding than the bigger more athletic Tyler as well.

I don't know about this kid.  Players with his size and athleticism are very rare, but on the other hand I haven't seen many people with a lot of positive things to say about him.  Immature, poor finisher if he's not able to dunk, inability to establish position in the post, no range, poor help defender, poor rebounder, doesn't box out or go get balls outside of his area.

Being a big athlete only gets you so far.  At this point, he's a project who is bad in every phase of the game.  Keep an eye on him in case he starts developing, but right now I think it's better to let somebody else roll the dice and do the work.
