The Phoenix barbosa, that would be a discussion.  His last few stops he looked more like a guy that would need to fight to get minutes with our backcourt guys.  Could have just been injuries and he is still young (how is that for green kool aid)
Its a great signing as he is basically taking arroyo's spot (who did a fine job) but barbosa is without a doubt an improvement.

I like that ainge has added guys who might have something to prove to this proven team.  green, darko, lee, barbosa all good players who should be even better and maybe prove to be great signings with the right system, teammates and competition from team

No.

He is the emergency guard.

Heck no. He'll be much more productive as a energy & burst scorer off the bench. Courtney Lee spectacularly well with Rondo, and I'd like to see that continue on into the season. Moreover, Courtney's game is more similar to Bradley's, which will make the potential re-integration of AB more seamless once AB deems himself healthy.

I'm not really for it, but there have been several things I've noticed about the Brazilian Blur:

1.He's only 29. Has he really shrunk down that much since his days in Phoenix? I think it's the matter of him being in the wrong systems since 2010.
2.He plays better next to a pure point guard like with Nash in Phoenix and Calderon in Toronto. Rondo could bring out the best in his game.
3.When Avery comes back, he is most definitely the starting 2 while Lee and Terry will be our back-up guards. If we have Barbosa starting while Avery's out, Lee and Terry get more experience playing together.

I want Lee starting, but Barbosa at the starting 2 might not be that bad of an idea.

I think Lee is the guy for other reasons as well. Lee and Bradley are such incredibly similar players that I think they will design their offense with the starting 5 around having that role at shooting guard. That means building around three things from the SG position: tight ball defense, 3-point shooting off the catch, and hard cuts to the basket... that's the Lee/Bradley game.

Yes, he has a very high chance of starting... if Lee and Bradley are injured.

Maybe if Rondo gets injured.

I'm really not sure.  I think of JET as an end-of-career rental, and Barbosa as a fill-in.

In a sense, the 3-guard rotation of the future involves Rondo/Lee/Bradley, with Lee starting, IMO.  JET will bolster things while Bradley continues to prove himself and both Brad/Lee refine their games, but his minutes will probably decline over time.

For now, we have a 4-guard rotation (spoiled as we are), and with Bradley out and recovering along slowly, Lee can secure that starting spot and Barbosa can get minutes around the main 3 guards.

So Barbosa is important, mainly because he shifts JET or Bradley to PG more if needed, meaning he's great for depth (and resting Rondo, which we never talk about).  But not starting.

Anyway, Barbosa is looking for a spot to shine and earn a better (mid level) deal next time, and this is a good place for that in the early months of the season.  But Bradley will end that, Shirley.

Prediction:  After several DNP-CD's, Doc will be asked about Barbosa and will be quoted as saying, "No doubt, he's going to help us win games this year" while continuing to sit him.

Please, I caught a migrane just reading this statement. Don't even put that thought in print. Let's not speak such an 8th seed statement!  :-X

Rondo is a transcendental player.
Bradley is on track to become one.
Sullinger has the potential to become one.
I'm not sure about Jeff Green.  (He has the potential but his development was hindered playing in OKC)

Every other player on the team are pieces of varying quality and at varying points in their career.  Barbosa and Lee are excellent players but neither of them are better than Bradley right now and will not take time away from his development.
However, while Bradley is out any one of Terry, Lee, Barbosa and Green can start at our open wing spot while Sullinger, Bass, Green or Darko can start at our open big spot.

Barbosa is a liability as a defender/rebounder at the SG position. Not a starting quality player at that position.

They are better off with Courtney Lee as a starter (while Bradley is out injured) and keeping Barbosa in a bench role.

I'd actually like to see Rondo, Lee and Terry form a three guard backcourt (while Bradley is injured) ... and for Barbosa to be a non-rotation player. Not convinced they gain anything by squeezing Barbosa into the rotation.

Agreed.

But should they have a "regular" 4-player rotation that can play 3 if someone's out, or

a 3-guard rotation with a 4th guard off the bench who can step in?

Presuming, of course, that the depth is as top-heavy as average, e.g. no stacking (like this year)of guards/crazy depth.

3-guard or 4-guard roation?

Continuity/rhythm or depth/versatility?

(I'd take the 3, and hope for a min contract 4th guard or rookie contract guy that can play)

Any chance this is a half-season rental scenario here? Maybe even discussed by both parties prior to signing?

Barbosa boosts his own value over the next month or two, then when Bradley gets back Danny could move Barbosa if the Darko experiment doesn't work out or something of the like.

We get guard help now, flip him for need down the line.  Seems like a win-win as I'm sure Barbosa isn't ready to be a fringe-rotation player yet.

Just a thought...

I don't recall where I saw it, but I thought it a good point: as a fellow Brazilian, Barbosa hopefully can help acclimate Melo's transition to the big leagues.

A cheap contract to help a larger/longer-term investment.

Any player has a chance to start. Play better than the competition and the coach and fans should embrace them starting or playing more. If they don't than they are idiots.

If Barbosa plays better than Lee than he should start/play more. He'd have to be pretty impressive as Lee has been handed the position as of now. He could always take it the way Bradley did (through injury)
