The only thing that would put Micah in front of Joseph if he could play PG. He is more versatile as the SG/SF where as Joseph is a more prototypical SF; but the only real need we have is at PG and perhaps at Center (Melo is useless this season - very puzzling pick).
Like I said in the OP, I am not talking about choosing between Downs and Joseph, they are both 3's and between the two, you'd have to choose Joseph right now.
This supposed "need" for a backup-backup-backup-backup PG has baffled me even before be picked up Barbosa, now we have more guys who can backup the point than we can find minutes more.
I'd rather have downs than Collins. I know Collins is our "Dwight stopper" but downs is an athletic wing that can run with rondo, and if pierce is out for some time (quite likely) then I wouldn't mind him and Joseph backing up green
This.
hard call, Collins is in the best shape I've seen him in forever. IF Darko and Wilcox were playing right now it might make more sense , I doubt DA will dump Collins long as there are bigs out.
Fab needs the minutes so bad.
This also. Unfortunately.
I could understand this if everyone was healthy but Wilcox is yet to play and Darko has a wrist injury. Melo is useless for a couple of years. that leaves Collins to back up KG.
Downs looks like a good kid and might be good enough to end up on a team at the end of their bench but he's not good enough to crack the top 12 on this team.

I agree with this. Still, it leaves the 5 spot overstocked assuming Darko & Wilcox can come back (all indications are that they are both close) and the thing I'm focusing in on is that the PF spot just doesn't have enough bodies.
If you think Collins is a wasted roster spot then I don't know what that would make downs. Why take a guy who has never gotten an nba experience anywhere over a proven vet that can play meaningful minutes and be huge for us in the locker room? Makes no sense to me.
This is a great point, I totally understand where you're coming from. But that "proven vet that can play meaningful minutes," well, shouldn't play meaningful minutes. He's a total scrub. Atlanta fans cheered his departure, and during last year's playoff series, his own fans would cringe when he checked into the game. I know I NEVER want to see Collins playing if there are alternatives like Darko or Wilcox available, and if it's mop-up time I'd rather give those minutes to Melo to let him stink it up. Maybe it's just me, but I sense even the other players are frustrated when they're playing with Collins, he's constantly in the wrong spot, he can't rebound, and he's got stone hands.
It is true, Downs doesn't have the experience, but its hard to say he hasn't played better than Collins so far, he seems like he could be a valuable plug if that 3 spot is leaking.
As I've said, this is all a fart in the wind, Collins will not be cut and conventional wisdom indicates that it's the right thing to do. But I'd prefer Downs to Collins based on the positional need and what they've both shown on the court.
