The league has come up with a plan:

Quote
The procedures will likely involve a postgame review of the play by the league office, rather than an official calling an infraction during the game, Frank said. Players would likely be fined if the league determined they flopped.

The proposed plan mirrors a ''postgame analysis'' option Stern discussed after the competition committee met in June. The league already retroactively reviews flagrant fouls to determine if they need to be upgraded or downgraded.

For this to work, I think you need to have escalating fines and possibly even suspensions for repeat offenders.

I'd be okay with only issuing fines to the most egregious flops where there is no/little contact and letting slide the embellishments that have plausible deniability.

I'd like to see escalating fines and possibly suspensions, but in fairness, you can't start suspending players all of a sudden this season for doing something that they have been rewarded for doing for the last 10 years.  These players aren't doing it to consciously be cheap anymore, they are doing it out of ingrained habit.

My HS coach even used to teach us 10 years ago how to flop properly while drawing charges which was a process that involved falling backwards (not being knocked over) in a rolling fashion so you don't hurt your back, lifting the head so it doesn't hit the ground, and flailing the arms.

But something has to be done because aside from it ruining the game, these bodies on the floor are going to start causing injuries more frequently.

I'll believe it when I see it but it's a reasonable idea to implement and enforce.  Perhaps increasing fines for the first 3-5 offenses followed by a game suspensions after that.

If the rule's applied consistently, this could work.  If the big name floppers like Wade and Bron continue to get favoritism, then this will be another officiating farce.

I think this will end up like the NHL.  They will fine them when it is REALLY blatant, but otherwise, it will be business as normal, because the refs really do reward flopping.  And unless they dramatically change how the rules are interpreted, flopping will remain a big part of the game.

I am fine with this as long as official call offensive fouls when the defender doesn't fall down.

Otherwise it will just mean the stars will go to the lines more often.

Easy.  No one can flop against them anymore either.

Lebron and Wade go to the line more often.

Yeah, I don't think Lebron and Wade are floppers.  They are more from the Pierce school of acting.  I think of floppers as guys who basically create a foul out of thin air...guys like Lebron, Wade, and Pierce just bring attention to the contact that is real.

C'mon ppl.  I'm a Celtic for life but we can't pretend we don't have a flopper in Paul Pierce.  Love Paul but that's one of the things he does best.

But I hate the idea to fine people for flopping. Get better refs that see flops, you don't have to fine people for beating the refs.

The only way this can possibly work is if there is an incredibly blatant flop and if they call offensive fouls when the defenders don't go to the ground.  I mean seriously, I sometimes trip when I am walking, contact (even minimal) at just the right moment and someone could realistically fall down and not be flopping.
