Didn't see this coming .. I was looking forward to seeing what Christmas had to offer but everything Eja said up above covers it.
He's there to be 7 feet tall, cheap and play against 3rd-rate centers while Melo learns to play basketball in Maine.
The fact that he was the #2 pick is somebody else's problem.
Stay classy, San Diego. Hello, Baxter? Baxter, is that you? Bark twice if you're in Milwaukee. Is this Wilt Chamberlain? Have the decency to say something.

If this is true it is very simple.

6 More fouls on Dwight Howard.

The great equalizer when playing the Lakers.

Howard is useless if he is going to the line 18 to 20 times a game. And the Lakers will be less effective.

I can hear Tommy now..."This Kid Can Play!"

I just hope he can get over the fact that is an end of the bench player.  I seem to think he played much better when he was starting, but would pout when he was a bench player and it seemed to effect his play a bit.

This is why we have Darko and not Christmas (yet).....this team is going to the playoffs. This is the LAST year barring some dramatic changes we can compete with the Thunders etc of the world.  Last year for the Spurs too.

Let's say you get to a week before the playoffs and Chris Wilcox goes down like he did last year.  God FORBID Wilcox AND Collins goes down.

What then?  You will never say "Oh! But we have Kris Joseph!" You won't say anything like that. If Wilcox goes down you will be very happy that you have Jason Collins and Darko rather than scramble to traumatize Fab or Sully.  You play a rookie like Sully out of position against Bynum and that's how injuries happen and we can't have an injury to Sully.

If you have Darko, even if Collins also went down, then with a little help from J Green, Kg, Sully, and Bass you can still have something resembling an NBA frontcourt rotation.  With Christmas and Fab you don't.  I highly doubt Fab, Christmas, and Joseph are going to get you anything or anywhere in the playoffs if we needed them.

Let's say Wilcox goes down but it's really only a two week injury and you juuuussttt need to get to the next round and it looks like a 5 game series just became a 7 game series and then guys will be tired in the next round.

You need a Darko there. Not a Christmas. Not a Haunukah. Not a Kwanza. Not a solstice. Not even a New Year.

There are tons of project wings in this league and all over the place. We can get another one. There won't be a rush to sign Christmas if we cut him.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
If someone can impart a little urgency to Darko, there is a real possibility that this could be the steal of the off-season (discounting the Lakers' Bynum/Howard swap and Steve Nash signing. Discounting everything the Lakers did.).

But that possibility is very low. Darko Milicic is kind of broken. I don't know if he can be fixed.

I would have preferred Birdman over either Collins or Darko, but this is a solid gamble on a player with legit defensive skills.

Have never liked him as a player but if he is one of us, then I will support him.  If anyone can get it to work it will be Doc.

Take that Miami!

So you guys have the players taken #1, #4, and #5 in one of the greatest drafts ever.  We now got #2!
Shtuff just got real.

For vet min, a very solid signing.  I always thought we still needed one more vet big.  Now we're set.  Grade A off-season for Danny.

Yeah but Darko is kind of like a really cruddy moped that needs to be fixed and spend weeks in the shop.

This year Fab is like a really really really awesome bicycle only you're trying to teach a very good athlete how to ride a bike in 3 days. In three days the training wheels will come off. That's fine. He'll probably be able to ride fine in three days. But even then he will still be slower than that cruddy moped that will come out of the shop in a few weeks.  I highly doubt Fab will make it to moped status this year. Darko is a cruddy moped in a league of Harleys, but he's still better than a great bike. Fab needs to go bike with the best bikers in Maine and become Greg LeMond this year and then hope to be a decent moped or dirt bike next year.

That was a weird analogy

I think this is the 2nd best thing we could've done.  Birdman would've been ideal, but I slightly prefer Darko to KMart and Big Ben.  Now we can let Christmas and Joseph fight and, depending on the official numbers, have enough money to cut a player in case anyone becomes available for the BAE.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

All he has to do is staunch the bleeding when KG sits. Defend, get the ball. He doesn't even need to score, that's what JET/Green are for. It's fun when KG leads the league in +/-, but not when it's because our bench can't defend a chair or hit the ocean with the basketball.

The good news is this is about the 5th year of it being the last year of our window.
