... and it's worth noting that Boston still has its bi-annual exception available.

Blakely may not be all that reliable but this report is nothing more than speculation by an even less reliable source.

I don't see how Martin is going to end up on the Celtics.  Plus, I am not sure he would be any better than Bass, Green, Sullinger.  I don't think we need him.

For the limited minutes he'd get I'd rather that contract go to someone like Ben Wallace.  At least Ben can give you center minutes.  Our power forward position is pretty stacked and at this point of his career I can't see where Martin could get any minutes

Is Ben Wallace any better of a center than Kenyon Martin is at this point in his career?

I don't think so. Kenyon Martin looked serviceable enough there when the Clippers used him at center. Personally, I think Kenyon is at least comparable if not superior to Big Ben at the center position.

Better isn't a description I'd use. Different is more the point.

Kenyon Martin brings a different type of skill-set to the table than the other options at PF. A well above average defensive player and solid possession creator. A skill-set that none of the other options at PF offer.

Gives Doc more options in choosing what types of lineups / matchups he wants to put out there. That is useful.

neither is my answer but i'd rather wallace if forced to choose
i'm thinking a mid season move makes more sense, we have pieces depending on play of guys (sully/bass)

I don't know how you would rather have Wallace. Martin came to a contending team during the middle of a shortened season last year and was a pretty interegal part of the clips playoff rotation.

Wallace has always been the worst of the worst offensively and o think his defense and athleticism has dipped dramatically compared with Martin.

Once again  ::)
NEITHER guy at this point in their careers is what I would think we could use.  Martin is a pf and we are stacked.  My point, cryptic perhaps, is that we need true center depth.  PF we are loaded, sf pierce, green then to joseph  :-\ , sg I'd say loaded, pg rondo, terry, dooling  :-\ .
So if we are going to add a body our needs our center and maybe pg

Martin at the minimum is a no-brainer.  With his shot blocking ability, he's about as much of a center as anybody is these days.  More importantly, his shot blocking would allow someone like Sullinger to play the 5, something he really can't do next to someone like Bass or Green.

The center thing is overrated.  You have Collins (and break in case of emergency Melo) to handle the hand full of big, bruising centers.  The rest of guys are better matched up with mobile guys like Martin, even if he is a little undersized.

Now, I am not sure how much Martin has in the tank, but if he has any, his ability to finish off the pick and roll is enough motivation for me to give him a shot.

You sign a guy like that not because you want him to be part of the rotation, but as insurance in case KG or Bass goes down for any extended period of time.

I am thinking along the lines of second team or going small matchups with K Mart as a big in the lineup for 10-15 mpg total.

VS Carlos Boozer? Kmart or Bass/Green?

VS Pau Gasol? Kmart or Bass/Green?

VS Zach Randolph? Kmart or Bass/Green?

VS Paul Milsap? Kmart or Bass/Green?

VS Either Lopez? Kmart or Bass/Green?

VS Chris Bosh? Kmart or Bass/Green?

VS Amare Stoudemire? Kmart or Bass/Green?

We could add a few more here easily. I guess for me in a limited time role only I take KMart in each of these matchups defensively.

Meh.  The guy is a referee lighting rod.  After the ecf last year I'm convinced that's the last thing this team needs.

Besides, either Fab or Sully will earn that role.  Along with Kg, Bass, Collins & Wilcox --- our front court is solid

of course he is but he isn't signing for that or he would have been signed a long time ago

I actually would love having this guy because he does bring defensive tenacity, nastiness, and athleticism that Rondo would love to throw oops too. He's actually a pretty good passer and he'd work well with Wilcox and Green on cuts.

But the main reason I would want him is all the confusion fans would have between him and Dooling. I can see it now.

"Did you see that? Kenyon Dooling just threw an alley-oop to Keyon Martin!"

And I would give him the bi-annual. He'd fit right into our physical nature.

The thing that annoys me is I think he's better than Collins and I'm not exactly sure why/how Collins is here and not K Mart. Now we're in this place of thinking there has to be a choice between a big and a guard and I feel like we shouldn't be there.  I also think Christmas or Joseph better show something kind of quick because if we keep one for the future and he becomes so/so then we hurt our last chance at a ring to keep a so/so player

Roles.  I am with you that KMart is probably a better player at this point than Collins (although I am not sure it is that far off...KMart has fallen off a lot).  But Collins fills a real specific need that they didn't have.  A long, tough, low post defender, who can handle guys like Howard and Bynum.  KMart won't really give you that.

In reality, Martin really just gives you the same things Wilcox gives you at this point (and is probably a step below Wilcox actually).  Which is valuable...but it is not a real need of this team with KG, Bass, and Wilcox already here.

Collins won't be useful against probably 80% (or more) of the league.  However, against that 20% (including one team in your division...perhaps 2, if Lopez gets down in the post more), Collins provides a real asset, and someone who would likely play minutes no matter who was healthy.  I am not sure KMart would be playing any minutes if everyone is healthy, which makes him purely depth, which is less valuable.
