If JJJ has a decked out five story condo, I hope he's got roommates. He's only earned $2 million in his career (counting this coming season). I hope he's banking some of that, rather than spending it all on a pad and alcohol.

It's a cool story, and I'm glad everyone had a good time. I just worry about young kids like this, especially since JJJ seemed like a nice guy. I hope he's taking steps to secure his financial future, because I don't anticipate he'll have a long NBA career.
I agree with the gist of what you're saying, but also keep in mind that Houston has a pretty low cost of living.
I did a quick search on Trulia and 4 story condos in downtown go for $500-600K (so a 5 story is probably more).
He now owns a hard asset, and is likely getting some tax breaks from the mortgage.
Of course, the whole "throwing a big party and supplying all the alcohol" is a troubling sign. And we know that pro athletes are notoriously bad with their money....
