I read this, thought it was pretty cool.  I like to see an owner act like a fan and speak his mind.  Very similar to our Ray Allen situation, though I can't imagine Wyc coming out and saying anything like that.

That answer came after Cuban was asked if Kidd would have his jersey in the rafters one day at AAC. Cuban said there was "no chance" of that happening after the way things ended.

"J-Kidd's a big boy, he can do whatever he wants," Cuban said. "But you don't change your mind like that. I'm sure I'll get over it at some point, but as of right now, I wouldn't put J-Kidd's number in the rafters."

Also interesting was he said Terry could have his number retired.

Quote
Cuban was quick to point out that the also departed Jason Terry could have his jersey retired, because he was totally forthright and honest throughout the entire process.

Let's compare Kidd and Allen:

Kid spent 6 full seasons in Dallas, and parts of 2 others (22 and 29 games).  In Dallas he was co-Rookie of the Year, 2x All-Star, 1x Champion.

Ray Allen spent 5 full seasons with the C's, 3x All-Star, and 1x Champion.

(Though I think Ray was clearly part of better teams as he played 91 playoff games, and part of 3 great playoff runs IMO, vs Kidd's 41 playoff games with Dallas and 1 great run).

Also Kidd makes it a little complicated because he wore two different numbers in Dallas.

But regardless of how he left, I think it's the right call, Kidd really didn't do enough in Dallas in my opinion to get his number retired.  Actually looking at it, as great as Kidd is, should he get his number retired anywhere?  He never spent more than 6 full seasons with any one team.  His best years were with the Nets, but when I think of Kidd, I don't think of the Nets.  Though I could see the Mavs coming around and retiring his number eventually during some dull season 10 years from now.

So should Kidd get his number retired, and which team(s) should retire it?

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Nets should definitely retire Kidd's number.

Dallas might be an instance where it takes years to mend fencese and his number eventually gets retired.  Whether he's deserving of getting his number retired by the Mavs is another question and my inclination is that he isn't deserving.

Miami will sign him for a day or two, then retire it.

Maybe the Nets just because they're such a cruddy franchise. Maybe

Lol. That's funny.

There isn't a bigger ego in the NBA then Cuban. I met him last year at a bar and I will say he was incredibly nice and friendly. Took pictures with everyone, shook everyone's hand, and definitely seemed down to earth. The Mavs were coming off the title, so there was nothing but love since this was in Dallas.

However, the dude has an ego and felt slighted. No surprise this is his response.

I think Kidd put himself in the top 4 or 5 PGs in the history of the league for the years he was on the Nets, and he probably should have gotten more consideration for MVP.  I can understand that he wasn't there for that long to have his number retired...but I think he deserves it for them.

For the Mavs, no way does he deserve it.  He was there for the bookends of his career.

I also don't think there is a comparison with Ray and Kidd.  Supposedly Kidd basically told Cuban he was coming back.  He even tried to woo Williams there.  Then, when Williams decided not to come, Kidd jumped ship too.

Ray on the other hand I think was pretty clear with the C's from the beginning that he was looking elsewhere.  Yeah, they may have thought they changed his mind, but I don't think he ever told them he was coming back.

I can't see any franchise retiring his number -- he never played long enough anywhere to really justify it.

Ray is in a similar situation IMHO -- he had 5-6 years in Milwaukee, Seattle and Boston each but to me at least, a number isn't retired unless the player spent the majority of their career with a particular franchise or played several years with a franchise at an MVP level.  Ray doesn't fit the bill in that regard.

There is only one Maverick in its entire franchise history that deserves to have his number retired and when he retires he will get it up in the rafters almost immediately.  Period.

Sadly, the second time he left was probably easier to swallow than the first time, when they had to break up a promising young team because of infighting.

The Nets should be the only team to retire Kidd's numbers

Cuban didn't own that team though did he? Probably really didn't bother him.

Triple J?  They broke up before Cuban got there.

Agreed.

On the Ray to Kidd comparisons, I think Ray is in the same boat. I doubt Boston retires his number (he was #3 of the Big Three, and only here for a handful of years....).
Celtics fan for life.
