But really, when you're trying to win a championship, why say this kind of thing about anyone that's not one of your own players? He could have said this about KG or Rondo. What does he gain from saying this about Kobe?
He gains nothing, its just what he thinks. Doc isn't angling for anything here, just making a statement.

Well, let me revise my question. Do you think it hurts us? Obviously KG is a professional, but we know how easily Rondo gets ticked off.

Just wondering.
No I don't think it hurts us, Doc has a strong relationship with our core players and I don't think he'd lie to them to "spare their feelings". There are other ways to smooth any diva moments over.

Okay, in that case then, I can see what he's talking about.

  • Let them hate, as long as they fear
Everybody is entitled to his own personal opinion, and not everybody else has to agree with it. Period. Im not privy to the facts on which Doc bases his opinion, but Doc knows more about the game than any of us, so I have no problem accepting the Docs appreciation of Kobe's efforts; maybe he is the hardest working player or maybe he is one of the hardest working players. Most honest and dispassionate fans will agree that Kobe is one hell of a player. This "hating stuff" transalates into envy stuff. We usually hate what we dont have or what give us a lot of trouble. If we had Kobe on our team, we would love him dearly. He would probably have attracted enough players to play with us and prpbably we would have won more than 1 flag in more than 25 years. Kobe has 5 rings. 5 rings he did not win by himself, but it is fair to assume that the lakers wouldnt have won those same 5 without Kobe. So, not having personal knowledge about what makes a player the hardes working player in the league, Ill defer partially to Docs aprecciation of Kobe and concede that Kobe is at least one of the hardest working players in the league. Fair enough.
And someday in the midst of time,
When they ask you if you knew me
Remember that you were a friend of mine

I wouldn't say the hardest, but I think he is one of the hardest workers in the NBA.

Does he start practicing 3 hours before every game?

David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Kobe is an ass, but everything I've read says he puts in the work.  Letting them do that experiment on his knees in Germany was psycho.

Yup. My respect for Kobe Bryant is off the charts, just like Derek Jeter. Just because you hate the team he plays for, just because you route against him every night, doesn't mean you can't appreciate the hard work and determination that a guy puts into his craft.

Yeah.  I've seen video and read articles about him offseason regimen which was something like 8-10 hours per day for 6 days a week.  Crazy.

The only person I've read who rivals this is Ray with the amounts of jumpshots and lengthy runs he takes daily.

I don't see it. I think of Bill Laimbeer,Bruce Bowen and perhaps even D.Wade as dirty.

If Kobe is dirty then KG is filthy.

"Dirty" means a very specific thing: trying to hurt someone else. Laimbeer, D.Wade, etc.

KG and Kobe don't do that, they just try to get away with breaking the rules. Which may be abhorrent, but is something completely different.

Kevin Love or KG works as hard or harder than Kobe.  I don't like him much , for a LA LAKER , but I admitt he is INSANELY driven to win and be the best player in the NBA. No doubt.

Kobe has the  "BIG HEAD" attitude more than any other player hands down, he beats out Wade and Bron even. Or even Baby Davis.

Don't think he is a very naturely friendly person.  He is stuck up , a bit mean , angry and overbearing .  Not someone I would care to hang out with, sort unfriendly , and this would explain why he doesn't come off being very marketable , he is TOO angry looking all the time.  This doesn't sell well with the public..  He is totally WOUND UP tigh as can be.  WOrse than most coachs I think.

My dog and Kobe look just alike in the face , so I can't hate on Kobe but so much cause I love my dog.  He is a good boy and he can't help it if he's cursed to look like Kobe.

The fact of the matter is that none of us really has any idea, and it's quite likely that even Doc doesn't know for sure.  No one is actually filling out log sheets or anything.

Kobe seems to be a really hard worker.  Not only has he kept himself in a phenomenal shape, he's developed his game over the years.

Not much more can be said in any sort of definitive way.

kind of just a ridiculous question when you think about it.

I love that this was posted the same day as the main page posting on Brian Scalabrine.  Let me take a few quotes from that posting:

Quote
"In the course of a game," Scalabrine notes, "if you run the floor every time, if you block out every time, if you show on every pick and roll, if you do everything full tilt, eventually your effort is better than theirs, even if they’re more athletic. I have to play a lot harder than everyone.

Quote
He (Scalabrine) earned his marginal career, and he earned our realization that he did. He squeezed everything from his talent, and anyone capable of that is always remarkable.

Brian Scalabrine is probably one of the worst players ever to be good enough to play in the NBA for 10 years or whatever it's been.  I guarantee you with every penny I've ever made that he works every bit as hard as Kobe Bryant, if not harder.  To say that someone is the hardest working player in the NBA is one way of legitimizing the success they've had, the money they've made, etc.  I get that.  But it's not true.

I agree with Doc. There's a reason why Kobe is a five-time NBA champion, likely on the verge of winning a 6th before he retires.
