If you're Howard and the Lakers don't win the title this season, do you really want to sign up long term with Nash and Kobe heading for retirement?

Mike

If I'm Dwight Howard, I definitely sign long term.  My three main choices are to:
1-sign up with the Lakers, with Kobe and Nash heading for retirement, as you stated, who will have monstrous amounts of cap room when Kobe, Gasol, and Nash depart (and the most desirable market and an owner willing to spend)
2-take a huge pay cut and sign up with the Mavericks with Dirk heading for retirement (and an owner willing to spend but a less desirable market)
3-take a huge pay cut and sign up with the Hawks with Al Horford and little else (and unsteady ownership and the least desirable market of the three options)

Choosing based on contract offer - Lakers (they have Bird rights)
Choosing based on ownership's willingness to spend - Lakers
Choosing based on current talent - Lakers
Choosing based on market - Lakers
Choosing based on future talent - tougher decision, but with potential free agent money and the best market, likely the Lakers

Thanks for the reply guys. So I guess the Lakers are technically on a rental?

Not yet.

It makes no sense for Howard (much like Paul with the Clippers) to sign an extension.  He can make more from the Lakers next season.

Well he could blow out his back for good and never play again.

You think he is even thinking about that?
