Why the Celtics are spending so much time on this is beyond me. Why couldn't they just say goodbye to Green and sign Delfino and Birdman???
1) Green is the better player.
2) They have no cap space, but the bird rights to Green.
Just to add some additional FYIs that (hopefully) will clip some recurring posts:
3) Green was not on the roster at the end of the season so he cannot be traded until Dec 15.
4) The one person who has the biggest motivation to delay the signing the most is Danny - and this has _nothing_ to do with whether he _wants_ Green any less. Danny still has the BAE and vet minimum tools with which to possibly sign another player - heck even if it is only to bring in someone to training camp on an unguaranteed contract. Even the latter could require a few hundred thousand of salary on the books for this coming season. The numbers aren't official yet, but it is believed that while we are over the cap, that we are just barely below the Luxury Tax threshold. This is an important number because things get very expensive if we go over it. Danny probably wants to optimize how Green's salary pays out over the life of the contract with two opposing motivations: A) If he pays him a little less now, then he has more room this year to make mid-season moves and still stay under the threshold. B) If he pays him a little more now, then Green's cap hit in the future years is less.
So Danny probably wants to delay as long as possible committing one way or the other until he has a good idea on whether he wants to try to bring in someone like Anderson with the BAE.
