He already trained under McHale in the early portion of his career.

At this risk of being accused a hater, I think dream has him.  His moves were just stunning.  He absolutely murdered people.

Wrong.   McHale is the only big to ever shoot 60 from the floor and 80 from the line.

Watch the 86 series.   Houston had twin towers and so did we.  We won.

Hakeem was great though.  But I think McHale had some of the best footwork ever.   Hakeen wasn't able to help Yao Ming play that well either I might add.

Parish vs. Sampson......... McHale against Akeem (before the H)......Bird vs. it didn't matter.  Bird was the MVP of that series.  That is why the Celtics won.

Loved McHale, but (H)Akeem had twice as many All-Star caliber seasons as McHale did. I know Kevin played 6th man minutes for about half of his career, but among other things, the Dream was more consistent for a longer period of time.  He made a big, strong, quick and taller Shaq look worthless when he faced him.  Especially in the NBA Finals.

Nonetheless, McHale was GREAT! Absolutely no shame in being the 2nd best offensive post player of that era.

Yeah you are right.  Plus people are ignoring Hakeem's superior defense and rebounding if we are talking about them as players overall.

Anyways though, this has to be one of the more wildly hijacked threads in a while, especially considering the OP provided no link.

Are there any videos of Kevin and Hakeem head to head?

Hakeem was the better player but McHale had the best (and the most) low post moves, probably of all time. That doesn't mean he was the most dominant low post player ever.

Did Pierce actually go?

Here's the vid of Howard's pilgrimage:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mArHU1ewSog

I've always loved this video. Hakeem is just so fluid and athletic. Amazing footwork. You can see how quick his mind works and how many counters he has. When he was on he was unguardable. Great teacher too.

Howard's jump hook definitely improved after he saw Hakeem, and has been consistently improving. His offensive game is still very basic though. I saw Kobe improve in the post as well. Not sure how much credit goes to Hakeem but I'm sure he opened up their eyes to some things.

I'm not sure if Paul would be agile enough to incorporate this stuff into his game. He's already got a great post game.

People, as much as I want to give McHale his props ... be honest, he didn't really create his own shot. He was a part of Bird's overall system.

If Bird and a mature Olajuwon had played together ... forget it! The '86 Celts would only have needed Parish off the bench, along with DJ, Ainge, Wedman, and Sichting. Walton may or may not have needed to contribute much.

That would have won a title, as Olajuwon with a constant double team down low, would have set up Bird to completely destroy any opponent out there, outside or inside.

For those saying he should go to McHale instead, isn't McHale a Head Coach for an opposing team?  How often do coaches for other teams help develop post moves for star players across the league?  When did McHale even become an option?

I think that McHale or Olajuwon is a matter of taste, Torture Chamber vs Dream. The thing about McHale was that he had so many moves and countermoves, relying on not only footwork, but head and shoulder fakes, arms etc. He had at least 20 go to moves, and you see nothing like that today. The Dream Shake is a thing of beauty, though.

I think, I would like Sullinger to get a master class with McHale. Pierce, Green and Melo would probably benefit more from Hakeem.

Love it "Torture Chamber" vs. "Dream". I am sure players used to hate being scored on by McHale. With Hakeem you could not help but admire his atheleticism. With McHale it must have been how did this dork just make me look like a complete idiot.

Yes, but McHale was typically guarded by a lesser defender, since Bird was always on the move and stole a lot of the defense's attention with his all around game.

Hakeem faced Robinson and the tandem Ewing-Mason in their respective primes and made 'em look like amateur defenders. In effect, Hakeem was the only target which opponents needed to fully cover because his teammates were mostly spot shooters, who needed to be wide open (Smith,  Horry, Cassell, etc) to be effective on the floor. McHale had Bird, Parish, DJ, Ainge, & Wedman all gristled stars or near stars.
