Joseph is a better rebounder and is not afraid to mix it up down low. This is critical for our small lineups where he can be very effective. He does need to add bulk however; but that can be addressed. Give Joseph half a season and he will be a better all around contributor than Pietrus. Pietrus plays decent man to man defense but was often late on closeouts and is not as good at team defense. Joseph plays the passing lanes better than most of the current C's.
I think its very unfair to assume that Joseph can immediately better than Peitrus, who is a proven player in the league. However, I also dont understand why he went so late in the draft, considering his stats and the fact that he was the highest scorer on the #2 nationwide ranked Syracuse, a team which made it to the final 8 in the NCAA tournament.
Here are two players stats
Player 1:
12.6 PPG
2.30 RPG
2.60 ApG
Player 2:
13.8 PPG
4.90 RPG
1.70 RPG
Player 1 is Dion Waiters, Joseph's teammate on syracuse, and the 4th overall pick in this years draft.
The second is Kris Joseph, the 51st pick in this years NBA draft. Granted, Kris Joseph is 3 years older than Dion Wiaters, so his upside might be a bit more limited. However, they played on the same team and had very similar stats, I dont see how KJ ended up going 47 picks after Waiters.
In fact, KJ actually had better stats than Waiters. He out did Waiters in both points and rebounds, while leading Syracuse in points and ranking as its 3rd best rebounder. And this isnt just some average Syracuse team. This team was ranked 2nd in the country for most of the season, and went to the quarter finals. Joseph was the leader of the team in many ways from the game and a half that I saw. He also contributed very solid zone and man to man D for a team which was a one of the best defensively.
He started college late, and was a senior, so he may not have as much potential as Waiters. However, I think he has an NBA ready game, and can really learn from someone like Pierce and develope into a very solid role player. It seems strange that he went so late (and that Waiters went so early), and this pick could end up being a steal.
