I really think one of the main reasons we're not going to re-sign Pietrus is because of Kris Joseph.

There are other valid reasons you could point too; we have Lee, Jet and Bradley at the 2 and we have Pierce and Green at the 3, or that Pietrus just had another knee surgery, etc...

But I think it really comes down to the potential of Kris Joseph and I full expect him to make our roster this year and "possibly contribute.

Here's why, when you compare Pietrus and Joseph:

1. Both are long 6'6" to 6'7" players who could play a little of the 2 or the 3

2. Both have very strong defensive abilities

3. Both have "decent" three point shots

4. Joseph looks to be the better slasher and he seems to have a better all around game

5. Joseph also looks to be the better passer and with his attack the basket mentality he will eventually get to the rim much more often than Pietrus

Joseph is young so it will take him some time - but we have decent depth and can develop him.

I think that overall he is just a better long term "prospect" and if he pans out he will be yet "another" solid young rotation guy that can run with Rondo -

Melo, Sully, Bass, Green, Courtney Lee, Bradley...

I think we save that Bi annual for another big man

Another dimension you should mention:
6. cost to sign Joseph < cost to re-sign Pietrus

It's because he wants more money and a bigger role then the Celtics have.

True on the cost - very good point.

I think Joseph will continue to suprise us. He reminds me of Ryan Gomes as a young player, with his mental approach to the game - you can almost see him thinking it as he plays.

And I think he knows how to be complimentary and hit the seems when they open. I like the fact that he can take the ball end to end as well off the boards...

Lastly, with his ability to get out on the break AND his nose to the basket attack mentality, he should do very well with Rondo in the open court.

I'm not saying I think we'll see a lot of this this year because he's a rook, but I see good potential and a good fit with Rondo and on the break - in time.

absolutely true. but i do find joseph's potential as a rotation guy compelling. i like his old school style. just think he could be an intangibles guy if he continues to show defensive instincts.

he's not likely to be a major contrubtor this year, but he's smart, he's experienced and his b-ball IQ already appears much higher than a guy like pietrus. to me, floor = adrian griffin and ceiling = bowen with a better midrange game.

Not really. Remember that most contracts are ascending, so we will surely be over the 74M apron next season. Once we are, we no longer can use the BAE and would only have the mini MLE next season. So basically it this season or never for the BAE.

I completely agree
Celtics would of won Game 5 way easier or have a better chance to win Game 6 if he would of made at least 5 or 6 more 3 pointers that he clanked

WOuldn't Jared Dudley be a better comp for Kris Joseph? Or is Dud's all around game better?  Anyhow, MP has been in the league for a while and is currently a better player than Kris.

word iont get da lovefest for either dooling or Pietrus. had some posters in here beggin for them to come back like they were stars when in reality they were inconsistent bench players who were bricklayers. also Pietrus wildly jumpin for pump fakes would negate his defense a lot of times. time to move on from him   Joseph/Christmas can exceed wat Pietrus, Quis, nd Sasha gave us last year

Pietrus was returning from a bad injury last year and is capable of playing much better. He certainly can be a valuable role player with his D and 3 point shooting (even if it is streaky).

Our problem is if Peirce or Green get hurt (not impossible at all). I would not comfortable with a second round rookie getting backup mins at the 3, especially come playoff time.  Lee is too small to guard most 3s.

For this reason, I would have rather seen Pietrus or Daniels over Dooling (I know Pietrus wants more $). We have terry and bradley who can back up the point and Dooling is terrible running the offense anyways.

The answer is maybe.  I'm not arguing that we should have kept Pietrus (I don't think we should have), but at least he was proven. Joseph may turn into something or he may turn into nothing.  We simply don't know the answer.

One played better defense on LeBron than anyone did in the playoffs.

The other has played Summer League.

I'm a fan of Joseph but this is absolutely a ridiculous statement.  Pietrus is a proven player and is better than he showed with us.  Even without being better than that, he's still better than Joseph.  I highly doubt Joseph sees the floor this year.

Maybe ceiling versus comp.

Dudley is very good, Thomas isn't (or hasn't shown it yet.)

I've always thought of Dudley as a poor man's Pierce, does everything, plays slow and in control, etc. Pierce is obviously elite/hof level, and Dudley is starter/6th man level, but I like the comp.
