This totally needed another thread before the start of the season.

Let's see some games first.

People need to get real. Saying Courtney Lee could be better than Ray Allen is a stretch. Lee has done nothing to suggest that he is a Hall of Fame caliber player let alone an All-Star caliber player.
Funny thing is, the majority of this forum thinks Avery Bradley is better than Ray Allen.  Same thing, right?   Lee has had more quality basketball than Bradley.

Funny thing is, if Ray played his entire career the way that he played last year people would never consider him to be a HOF caliber player. For all of your swipes at Avery Bradley, consider that he beat Ray out of a starting spot and the team played better with him playing than with Ray.

Funny thing is, some people on this forum just can't accept the fact we were a better team with bradley in the starting lineup. Funny thing is, some people can't seem to accept the fact ray isn't 25 anymore. Funny thing is, some people can't seem to accept the fact LEE is a better fit for this team and RAY now plays for the miami heat.

To clarify, he beat out a Ray Allen who was hobbled by bone spurs.

Prior to the all-star game (i.e., when Ray was generally healthy) he shot 47% from the field and 48.5% from 3PT.  He also was playing good (though not elite) defense.  Neither Avery Bradley nor Courtney Lee can touch that level of play.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
On offense, yes, but on defense Courtney Lee>Ray Allen
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

And ray can not even dream of touching the level of play that bradley provides on the defensive end.

Except that Bradley surpassed that. Post all star he was 52.2% from the field and 50% from 3PT. His level of play in April was just ridiculous...

Haha I know, did we get Courtney Lee, or 1989 Clyde Drexler? I mean he's a nice player, but we gave up a King's ransom to get him and he's not really the defensive specialist we think he is.

All that said, I do like having him here.

Ray Allen c. 2007, coming off ankle surgery, was an all star.  He was a threat to turn the corner off of picks and go down the lane.  Not any more.  He has decent handles and passing for a wing/guard.  That's about it.  Currently, his only lethal threat is shooting and generally smart play.

Lee is a significant upgrade over 2012 Ray Allen.

I suspect Ray looked better than he was at the beginning of the year due to everyone else being out of shape, too.

At this point, Lee is better.  He won't have a HOF career, but he's a legit starter that fits well, unlike Ray.  He'll play end-to-end, not 3pt line-to-3pt line.

In short, we upgraded considerably.

Ray knows it, too.  If he thought he could carry any part of the load, he wouldn't have to tag along with the stooges in Miami.

Awesome.  So I'm sure you also believe Courtney Lee is better than Ray.  That's my point :)

Yeah the one thing Ray can totally do is still shoot.  Out of shooting guards, I believe he was top 5 in FG% (46%)... #1 in 3P% (45%) and top 3 in FT% (92%)

Come playoff time he was injured.  But injured Ray Allen (11 points, 4 rebounds, 40%/30%/71%) arguably outplayed injured Avery Bradley (6.7 points, 2 rebounds, 37%/22%/67%)

Ray has always been rather underrated and under-appreciated by this fanbase.  That combined with the perceived lack of respect he got from the team (trying to trade him multiple times... almost succeeding in trading him... benching him for a 2nd year undersized shooting guard, etc) and apparent lack of respect he got from his student (Rondo) lead to him bailing for a team that wanted him.  He'll be huge for Miami.
