Steamer has one significant NBA skill...blocking shots...but he can do enough in other areas, where he's a serviceable backup center.  I think he was hurt in the playoffs.  He was a liability in their defensive schemes because he couldn't rotate effectively. Some of that may have just been Steamer not being athletic enough, but he did enough of it during the season where I think he was hurt.

He was hurt, had plantar fasciitis. Most guys sit out with that, it can really prohibit your movement and agility. He was so worn down he didn't even practice, and would in fact wear a boot outside of game days.

The 2nd half of the regular season, I thought he and Bradley - combined with KG of course - were the reasons the Celtics had the success they had.  Steamer was solid off the bench. 

Don't see how they adequately replace what he brought to the table before the playoffs - base on what's out there along with they can pay right now.

I am not sure that report from Blakely about 1yr deal is true.

AFAIK you can't offer RFA 1yr deal.

This could be possible only if Celtics renounced him and made him UFA.

Right now teams are going to be able to attack the basket against us and we're going to be a lousy rebounding team again. Only hope for that not happening right now is Melo developing, so I think we have a problem.

Not as big as some of the other potential problems entering the summer, but it's a significant problem that will cost this team some wins if not addressed.

Horrendous counterargument. They couldn't play at all because of heart conditions. You and I both know that they would have contributed if they were on the team, unlike the departing cadaver in shoes.

If he had been willing to sign for the vet min like Wilcox then I would have been glad to keep him. Comparing him to Green makes absolutely no sense, and neither does taking my comment out of context, it was a reply to someone else's comment.

Greg, when healthy, was a below average defender with terrible lateral movement who got pushed around by other centers inside. He was an excellent shot blocker and had a decent midrange jumper. That's it. He would not solve our rebounding issues, in fact, he didn't at all solve them last year when he was healthy. He is not worth the BAE, never mind 3 million/year. Good luck to him, he seems like a good guy.

Sullinger is a solid rebounder and wilcox as well...both should get some minutes.

not sure if Melo will. but IMO he cant be worse than hollins at this point

Don't see the difference. The three of them were injured. Steamer was injured and because of that never practiced, how did you expect him to make a big contribution  while a) was a rookie (old one, but still a rookie) b) had plantar fasciitis

During the regular season he made good contributions when healthy, still had some deficiencies but nevertheless he was helpful.

I think he was the best big we could have gotten for the $1.9 million BAE.  Maybe Darko's still in the picture, or Haddadi, or (please, no!!) the Birdman.

 Otherwise, we are probably looking at a summer leaguer trying to make a roster.  Who knows, though?  Sometimes those guys work out.  Just look at Greg Stiemsma.
