Any opinions on Hassan Whiteside?  He was blocking 3 shots a game in the summer league and got waived to sign Brooks.  He is about as athletic as it gets and played last year in China.

I think some decent big men aren't going to make the teams they are playing for this summer league.  Any other guys you guys want to throw out there who might not make the clubs they are playing on this summer?

I was against the idea when JJJ was still here because with JJJ, Fab Melo and to a lesser degree Sullinger ... I thought Boston had too many project (JJJ, Fab Melo) to work-in-progress (Sully) on the roster.

With JJJ getting traded to Houston, I am now more open to the idea.

I am curious about the timing of Hassan Whiteside's departure though. A few months after they went out and signed the best big man coach in the NBA (Clifford Ray we miss you! come back!). Maybe Whiteside was uncoachable? Didn't work hard enough for Ray?

With his physical talent, Whiteside could be an All-Star level prospect. So I am reluctant to give up on him. But his lack of progress over the last two years + Sacramento's decision to give up on him a few months after hiring a top big man coach are fairly large red flags.

Doc or Danny should phone Cliff Ray and find out what the inside scoop is on that. If it's negative, I'll take a pass. If Ray liked his work-ethic, bring Whiteside on board.

I am not sure we have roster space for another project big.  We need another reliable big man and third string PG, and I think Joseph and Christmas will both make the team as well, giving us 15.

Lets try to develop Sully and Melo first, before we start looking at other projects.

No more projects. Why the hell are you guys so enticed by people who do well in the summer league? It's a lower caliber league than even the D-League. There are proven bigs that haven't been signed yet, we should be looking into them.

Bring back Steamer.

Proven bigs like Darko and Anderson?

I'd trust Andersen in the playoffs a lot more than Whiteside.

I think they've proven they can give 5-10 mediocre minutes per game at the 5 spot in the NBA.  No summer league player has proven anything of that sort.
Like some have said, we do not need another project big man- we are looking for a reliable backup, and preferably a veteran.

You look up Anderson's numbers in 15mpg last year and compare them to Whiteside's in less than half the minutes/game and Whiteside's numbers look better.  He blocked 1.6 shots in his 6 minutes v Anderson's 1.4 in 15.  If you double Hassan's rebound totals per game they match Anderson's.  They seem comparable only Whiteside is younger and more athletic.

I really can't say I've personally watched much of either so it is hard to give a really informed opinion.  My first choice would be to get the Steamah back.

Stiemer would be nice, but I think he's going to be gone to Minny if all the rumors are true. The Celtics may be able to keep him by adding the BAE to his QO but I don't know if Danny wants to do that. Here's the remaining UFA Cs per the Free agent tracker

Pickings are slim
Darko
Blatche
Przybilla
Tony Battie (He did save PP's life)
Jason Collins
Eddie Curry (not really SLIM pickings )
Erick Dampier
Diop
Fesenko
Aaron Gray
Haddadi
Magloire
Nazr Mohammed (think he's close to deal with Nets)
Ben Wallace
Shelden Williams (not likely)
Chris Andersen (lots of baggage)
Hassan Whiteside (could be another Steamer? 5 rpg and 3 bpg in SL but project?)

Darko may be the best of that bunch. Depending on what other teams are offering and how scared he is of KG, he may be a possibility still. Blatche is a wild card. I've heard a lot of talk about how unmotivated he is and what a bad locker room guy he is and that makes me think of Mark Blount and that's not a very pleasant thought.

As a 3rd string center several would be serviceable but if we had an injury, I wouldn't feel comfortable with most of them as back up. There may be another waivee or amnestee yet, but as of now, I think this is it.

My choices, in order are, Stiemsma, Darko, Prysbilla, Collins, Blatche and Anderson. However, I don't know if any would sign for what the C's would offer.

I would add that Greg Oden is someone that isn't mentioned much as an option, but is at least worth kicking the tires on.  Especially if he and his people are starting to let it leak out that he would be open to trying to play this season instead of waiting for the 2013 offseason.  Despite the fact that his people have let it be known that Miami is his preferred destination, I think there is an opportunity to steal him away.  Even if he's not ready until late in the regular season, I think he is right what this team needs.  He's a really great rebounder, defender, and shot blocker when healthy.  If Danny was bold enough to try and roll the dice on him now by offering him a guaranteed 4 Million over 2 seasons with the BAE right now instead of Oden having to wait another season to get that from Miami, Danny might be able to get his hands on a 24 year old center that can fit in right away and fill a big need in the middle.
