Ive noticed a lot of people are taken aback by Rondo's recent comments proclaiming himself the best PG in the league. I thought after Magic crowning him the best in the league, after the 4 playoff triple-doubles, the 44 point game, and the assist streak that it was Rondo or Chris Paul. Those are the guys. I know some folks still stand by Deron Williams or D Rose as the best but some folks think Manu is better than Kobe as well. Am I wrong in my sense that the media now considers Rondo the best of the best?

I'll leave my own personal opinion aside here but the media seems to think CP3 is the best.

Yeah there's never a "consensus" opinion on this sort of thing but CP3 is probably considered the best.  Deron has lost some cachet by being on a couple of lousy teams (remember even CP3's worst rosters generally made the playoffs).  Here's how I think the general media opinion goes - leaving my own opinion out of it:

1. CP3
2. Rose
3. Rondo
4a + b.  Westbrook and Deron.  Deron has been around longer but Westbrook's the new hot thing.

Most media figures I've seen definitely respect Rondo as a guy who steps up in the playoffs, though - maybe the best in the league for playoff performance.

Rondo is widely recognized as a better playoff performer than regular season, though - maybe the best in the league for playoff performance.

I'd add Tony Parker to that list too.  His reputation in the media is climbing as he ascends to the top of the Spurs priority list.

My thoughts on the media consensus currently is:

1. CP3
2. D-Rose
3. Rondo
4. Westbrook
5. Tony Parker
6. Deron

and then there is a sizable gap.

The Olympics will obviously not help this.

Rondo fought his way up to #2 this past playoffs, subject to re-evaluation once D.Rose recovers.

If rondo's playoff jump shot sticks into the regular season and he becomes more of a scoring threat, definitely 1a and 1b on the list with CP3

I'd've put Parker 6th but I can respect that ordering.  He still seems to be an afterthought most of the time (to the media) after Duncan and sometimes Ginobili.  But he's the only star PG with a better playoff resume than Rondo  (Kidd's no longer a star).

I'm sure Deron will start getting more hype again now that the Nets are in Brooklyn and look like a stronger team.

I think Rondo should be above Rose just because Rose is always injured.

I consider Rondo to be the best pure PG in the league. He has a pass first mentality, but I think that is because he can't really sink his own.

Speaking of Magic Johnson..

Does anyone have the Felger and Mazz audio of them making fun of Magic?

It was after game 5 against Miami.

"Watch out for dese Celtics"

"I like the Celtics MORE better den da Heat"

"Oh..here is the Magic 8 ball. Shake em up Shake em up"

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Nba players do this stuff all the time. When asked to justify this, they say, 'it's the way I gotta think about it. I have to believe I'm the better player, it's just who I am.'

Non-story.

This argument is not even close to over.  Between Rondo, Paul, Rose, Williams, Westbrook, Rubio, Wall, Irving, etc.,  this is going to be a really great, heated debate for a better part of the next decade.  There is no other position in the NBA right now with as many great or potentially great players.

I love it.  The age of the point guard.
DKC Seventy-Sixers:

PG: G. Hill/D. Schroder
SG: C. Lee/B. Hield/T. Luwawu
SF:  Giannis/J. Lamb/M. Kuzminskas
PF:  E. Ilyasova/J. Jerebko/R. Christmas
C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson

You're probably right, but my rationale on Parker is that he was 5th in league MVP voting this year (after LeBron, Durant, CP3, and Kobe).  That is some pretty heady company and is voted on by the media.

And great point on Deron.  Whether he deserves it or not, Deron will be shooting up the media hype list.

I'm thinking of becoming more like Rondo now. Straight talk, no pretense, no false modesty. I don't have the courage yet but baby steps.

Hell, I think more people should be like Rondo, not just me. He's saying what he believes. Nothing more, nothing less.
