I've been trying to figure this out, since a lot of contracts haven't been made official, players are being amnestied, etc. Houston wants to preserve it's space to go after Howard, and so won't S&T Lee for Dooling, because the cap space is valuable at this point (it may become less so if Howard goes elsewhere, but it's not clear that's happening any time soon.)
Accordingly, we need a third team to help us out by using a little under $3 mil of their space, and being compensated with a draft pick in return. What teams out there have space? The best I can tell the options are:
Charlotte - $4.5 mil room, 14 players signed
Cleveland - $10 mil room, 10 players signed (but I think I'm missing something with them.)
Denver - $8 mil room, 14 players signed (but they presumably just amnestied Birdman to create room to keep Javale Mcgee, instead of be nice and help us with a deal.)
New Orleans - $5.5 mil room, 12 players signed, once Belinelli definitely leaves, and Landry probably leaves.
Phoenix -- $17 mil room, 9 players, have to deal with Robin Lopez, and have been rumored to want Lee also.
Toronto -- $6 mil room, 11 players signed.
Of those, the best options would seem to be Charlotte and Cleveland. If Phoenix doesn't want Courtney Lee, they could be a great option, but that's only if they don't want Lee. Toronto wouldn't be bad if they don't mind helping out someone within the division (generally a no-no, but who knows.) A possible wrinkle, of course, is that $2.7 million isn't enough to entice Dooling to go to one of the two most likely destinations and finish out of the playoffs (although Cleveland looked promising before Irving got hurt.)
Is there a trading partner I missed? Do one of the above have less room than I think (I ignored some cap holds that involved players who were clearly not returning.)
