Later, probably.

What is better, an early pick, a later pick, or a middle pick in the first round?

I'm going either early or later, with middle being the worst. You either get a superstar, or a commanding position in the 2nd and 3rd rounds to work with.

The middle can be useful on Day 1 when people are scrambling to get a cornerstone.

Middle pick is the worst.

The 1st could land you a franchise player.

The last could get you a very good one, and another since you pick first in the second.

I'd take a franchise player or two very good ones over middle pick all star player and some just good ones in the next rounds.

Makes for tough trading later though. When including future picks, elboe picks make good fodder. Middle picks don't seem to get the same return, irrational as it may seem.

Clearly an early pick.  Teams with Lebron, Durant, etc. are going to be in the semi-finals almost by default.

True, just means you got to be on your game.

If the draft was nba2k12, early would be 'pro', later would be 'star' and middle would be 'superstar'

True though I have made it to the final 4 with KG and Dirk as my cornerstones as well.
