Ainge's off season has been a bit of a roller coaster, with Benedict Allen jumping ship, but DA had an inkling and jumped at Jason Terry for the veteran shooter role when the clock struck midnight the first day of free agency.

Now he's scrambling for a S and T with Dallas to preserve the MLE to throw at one of the two young guards on the market who would be able to step in here and play high level basketball, OJ Mayo and Courtney Lee.

To me Mayo has a bit more upside, with combo guard skills, but is less of a team player.  Lee is a perfect combination of size and shooting ability, is close to Doc Rivers, and has Finals experience.  I prefer Lee, but would be OK with Mayo, figuring that the strong locker room veteran presence would rein him in (or someone could just punch  him if necessary).

I feel getting one of the two is the difference between the Cs being  true top level contenders or just falling short, like this past season.

What say you?

I think they are more for insurance really, but if we land neither of them, we will be fine if everyone is healthy for the playoffs. We are already better than last season (when AB is healthy) if we stay healthy. *fingers crossed*
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

No -- neither guy will play an important role here. Bit-part players.

I think acquiring either of these guys is essential to the teams success this year. Bradley will miss significant time, and without a full off-season, I don't think he will progress enough to improve this team enough to beat the heat. I prefer mayo because if he can live up to his potential finally, the c's will hav. AAnother capable goto scorer to play along side pierce. Lee is more of a system guy. He would depend on the offensive sets and turnovers to get his points. Mayo can create his own shot.

It would be nice, but not essential. There are cheaper, less good SG options available if Cs can't get Lee or Mayo. While these other options aren't as good, they will have shorter contracts and give the Cs more flexibility going forward.
Celtics fan for life.

Delusional traded Ray for OJ Mayonnaise so he should do everything he can to get OJ here. Why Ainge wanted the guy is beyond me, but that is what makes the guy delusional to begin with.

I believe he was getting a pick as well which he valued. Since at the trade deadline it looked like the team needed to be blown up for a rebuild.

In hindsight, trading Allen for Mayo would have been a fine idea.

Courtney Lee could contribute on both ends, but he's far from essential. OJ Mayo is great on offense, but he needs to learn/commit to defense to be an essential player for a title team.

I'd love to have either, especially OJ, but I wouldn't give up yet on JJJ. If S&T Dooling + SW + Moore can work, ok. If not, get Pietrus as a wing defender and we're set.

Our key players are Rondo, Bradley, JET, Pierce, Green, Bass, Sullinger and KG. Wilcox and Pietrus will contribute, and hopefully we can get something out of the young kids other than Sully. You could add OJ or Lee to the key players, but the essential players are Rondo/Bradley+JET/Pierce/Green/KG.

im still in the camp for wanting Mayo. I think th celtics culture and the veteran players on this team could turn him into an all star. 18.5 shooting 43% as a rookie and 17.5 shooting 48% in year two before his move to the bench. He still only 24. Id love to see what he could do here, especially alongside Rondo

This.  Players with Mayo's talent rarely become available in FA.   I think Doc's mentorship could do wonders for him.

While its interesting to discuss, the odds of getting either on is slim.  And in terms of essential, I guess the question is essential for what.  Essential for competing for a title?  Then yes, when you want to be the best every little bit helps.  We're  it favorites and I think both would be an upgrade over pietrus.

Would rather have OJ, but I'd take either one.

Between Pietrus, Daniels, Pavlovic and Dooling, I don't understand why the Celts can't work out a sign and trade with either Houston or Memphis.

If they don't want anyone of those players, than that tells you alot.

Back to the original question, yes acquiring one or the other is essential.

I like Courtney Lee, but at this point I'm leaning towards wanting to see Dooling, Pietrus, Stiemsma.  Done.
