Anybody care to remind me what Rondo's averages were this past playoffs?
Yes... his playoffs were outrageously awesome and deserves considerable credit. Three things:
#1 - His 2009 playoffs were incredible as well. He averaged nearly a triple double. It didn't continue into the 2010 regular season. Match-ups can inflate numbers.
#2 - A lot of those stats have a little to do with the competition and defenders he was going against. Russell Westbrook torched Miami's defense a couple times too.
#3 - He averaged 42.6 minutes per game. He normally averages around 36 minutes... unquestionably a contributor to his statistical jump.
Here's the line: 17.3 points, 11.9 assists, 6.7 rebounds, 2.4 steals ... 47%/27%/70% ... Nobody is taking that away from Rondo. If we were to look at the playoffs and the playoffs alone, those stats made Rondo third best player in the league behind King James and Durant. But I have legitimate reasons to believe those brilliant numbers will not continue into the next season. I'm basing my observations on what he did during the regular season against a variety of competition: 11.9 points, 11.7 assists, 4.9 rebounds, 1.8 steals, 45%/24%/60% ... Still his best season to date, but not MVP level.
