you basically have a Magic starting 5 of:

Howard
BBD
Turkoglu
Richardson
Duhon

who would they have besides what they got from the Magic?

Gary Forbes?
Toney Douglas?

Donatas Montiejunas will make his NBA debut this year for the Rockets. Dirk 2.0

Not bad.  Im suprised the Magic wont take him too, they are taking everything Houston has in the rumored deal.  3 young players in Patterson, Morris, Parsons, plus the 3 first round picks from this years draft, plus Kevin Martin.  Plus they would still have JJ Reddick and they drafted Andrew Nicholson.  Thats a super young team, but they would have assets thats for sure.

... definitely a situation where I'm not a fan of this "2.0" label everyone is using.

How about Dirk-esque?

What an enormous gamble by Houston.  If Howard ends up not re-signing with them, they'll make last years Hornets look like the 86 Celtics by comparison.  Will be an unmitigated disaster.

yeah, Richardson and BBD are signed for 3 years.  Turkoglus horrible contract is for 2 years.  I guess thats their plan, if they dont sign Howard back, they will get really bad and go for the #1 pick.

Im assuming they would trade picks from 2013, 2015, and 2017.  So if Howard left in the summer of 2013, their pick in 2014 would be top 4 easy.

I have said before and I still would now, I do the deal for DH b/c he will have really no other team to go to if he walks... even if he chooses another team, it's going to be a bad (no better than Hou) one b/c all of the teams with good players wont have room for him. All the teams with big markets are also at max with people so... it's who he's traded to for the re-up or scraps. Hou is doing the right thing to me, put up or shut-up! One risk they are taking that's bigger than him walking on them to me is, his health, but again I take that risk!
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

My read on that was that it would not be 3 future picks, but rather the 3 picks they just made this year, but I haven't really read what they'd give Orlando anywhere else.  Only what I quoted above.

We've seen many teams position themselves (salary-wise) to go after superstars before, and sometimes in short order.  Most times things don't go as they plan, and they don't get the object of their desire, so it's still a huge risk on Houston's part in my view, but it could very well pay off.  The Nets' Williams gambit turned out nicely for them.  The Bulls cap space went begging for a number of years, and there was only one winner in the Lebron sweepstakes among those who'd finagled their cap space for a run at him. Ballsy move, whether it works out or not.

Potentially Jeremy Lin and/or Omer Asik.

I dont understand the logic in signing Osik to 8 mil a year and then selling the farm and starting from scratch to get Howard as well.

Well, Asik wouldn't be $8 a year, I don't think. The contract is backloaded, with the last year being $15 million.

Still, it'd be quite a bit of money to pay a backup center.
