I'm going to go out on a limb and say that whether he's judged to be an NBA-level defender will determine (a) whether he makes the team, and (b) whether he ever plays.

Agreed. His defense will make or break his place on the team. He'll need to show it in training camp, as well.

with our top guards locked in, probably gotta choose 3 out of these 5:

Moore
Peitris
Daniels
Joseph
Dooling

if we keep 4 then we'll only have 2 true Centers in Fab & Steamer.

Top 7:
RR, AB, PP, KG, Bass, Green, Terry

Backup Bigs:
Sully, Melo, Steamer

personally, I'd rather see more bigs down there...

Like to have Wilcox too.

If we only could keep two of those guards, I'd want to keep Joseph and Pietrus because of their versatility. They both can play the 2 and the 3

Can we still carry 15? If so, Moore and Dooling would be my choices along with Joseph and Peaches.

I had forgot JJJ initially, with him under contract & assuming we retain the Steamer we'll have 11.

That means we only 4 spots left for: Wilcox, Moore, Joseph, Dooling, Peitrus, & Daniels.

I'd prefer Wilcox, Joseph, Peitrus & Dooling.
From what I've seen Moore can't play pg at all, and with 2 other undersize 2's ahead of him, Dooling becomes our only Rondo insurance...

Joseph & MP would be nice compliments to Rondo/Terry/AB due to their size & ability to defend 2's and 3's.

I have watched all the summer league games and I think he is a lock to make the team.  The kid is a player, a steal at #51

I like Marquis, but I think it's time to move on. Doc would not trust him in the playoffs, and while he played well, he hardly got off the pine. New blood!

The one thing that might save Moore is that Terry can handle the ball well enough to bring it up the court.  The second unit might run their offense through Sullinger so a true PG backup might not be necessary.

Although, if Rondo gets hurt...

I think Joseph has made the team.  I can't see Daniels coming back.  I don't think Dooling comes back either.  Same goes for Sasha and unfortunately Peaches.  That leaves some spots open.

SPG- Rondo  Backups- Terry and Moore
SSG- Bradley  Backups-  Terry, Moore, and Joseph
SSF- Pierce  Backups- Green and Joseph
SPF- Bass  Backups- Green, Sullinger and JJJ
SC - Garnett  Backups-  Stiemsma and Melo

That is 13.  Almost certainly another true point will get added and Wilcox might later in the year when he is ready to play again.  If we pick up Lee then Moore's spot becomes pretty hard to justify although maybe JJJ gets moved in the deal for him.

It's summer league. Who else did you think looked like a "lock to make the team" ?

Yes Joseph was an absolute STEAL in the second round!....he is going to be a part of the future of this team, and along with Jeff Green fill the void when Pierce one day retires.  Our bench is looking might strong right about now and i see joseph as a great element to that bench, to give pierce and green a rest and not have too much of a talent drop off. (not saying joseph is on the level of a pierce but he styles his game after pauls and can fill in for him very efectivley as we will see this year.)

He's been very impressive in the summer league. I'd give him a spot.

NBAdraft.net thinks he has a decent shot as a defender:

"Strengths: Excellent frame and length for the small forward position- measured in with a 6’11 wingspan and 8’7.5 standing reach at the pre-draft combine. Looks the part of an NBA swingman, with well above average physical tools and agility. He bulked up significantly during his four years at Syracuse without adding much extra weight. ....... Length wreaked havoc in 2-3 zone, consistently getting deflections and jumping passing lanes (1.4 SPG). Projects as a versatile defender possessing size, athleticism and lateral quickness."

I like his chances too.

I have only caught three games but he looks like he belongs in the league.  Looks like a well rounded player reminds me a little of Marion without the insane rebounding.

Id have to agree that there is zero chance that Joseph doesn't make roster. He's been very impressive and I know its only summer league, but his size, demeanor and bball iq are very strong. I watched a lot of Syracuse games and at least in this past season they had a brutal schedule where he was defending and being defended by NBA talent pretty much every night. He's got an ability to envision the way plays happen and manipulate the defense with timed aggression. People are comparing him to pierce, which is a good comparison. To me he's even more like scottie pippen. Obviously that's a serious comparison but he shares similar athletic and physical qualities and his sense of knowing where everyone is on the floor is something you can't teach. My critiques are mainly based on offense and he will have to work on strength and prove he can defend the elite 2 and 3 positions in the east.  For me after watching every summer league game Joseph and sullinger are our two best youngins. Etwaun has been okay but trying to do too much.
Back on point, Joseph could turn out to be a starting caliber player/poor man's scotty pippen in the NBA. I can't believe we got him so late.

"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

he's so far got the basics down contests without fouling, stays on his feet uses his length

I've only seen bits and pieces of him, but I liked what I saw.

Hope he sticks around.

He's been the best "surprise" of summer league so far.  I can't believe he slipped to 51.  Another steal by Danny.
