There is more here, Collison is a starting PG.

4/$16 for Mahinmi?  What exactly are the Pacers seeing in him?

They probably see the market price for big men is insane so maybe hoping to get a bargain if he improves

Did you see him in new Orleans? He's plently good.

How big/long was Jones' contract. Could be clearing space I guess.

I think this is a terrible trade for Indiana. I don't think they should've traded Collison in the first place, but if they really wanted to, I would've thought they could've done much better.

  • We may as well put Tyrion in at center.

Jones' contract is about 2.9 million. Very good value contract wise, I really like him. He's a tenacious defender and great shooter.

I think Jones > Mahimni alone.

This deal is very odd to me, Collison is a starting caliber pg and Jones is a top tier defender. Mahini is a below avg C. Hell I would have signed a traded Steamer for that package.  Seems like Indy panicked with Kwame Brown, Robin Lopez, and Nazr Mohamed still on the market.

Jones was only signed for this year.

And I saw Collison in New Orleans, but the larger sample size in Indy was more revealing.

Yeah this trade makes zero sense to me.

I don't know. I don't think $4 million is too much for a young backup center like Mahinmi. Maybe a little high, but I am sure they are banking on his improvement over the life of the contract.

Collison was expendable, with George Hill signing a big new deal. Jones is filler, so Pacers consolidate payroll into addressing a real need.

The story nobody is talking about here is that the Pacers apparently wanted to create some playing time for Born Ready. Stephenson apparently deserves more than a little time in the Pacers eyes.

Additionally, Collison was gone next year.  Having committed to George Hill, there's no way they were going to match any offer sheets Collison got in free agency, so might as well try to get something now.  I'd have thought they could get more than Mahnini, but perhaps they see something in him they like, and with the money given to unproven centers this offseason, it's difficult to say that he'll be overpaid for the next four years.

They're also bringing in Gerald Green!!!

I like Ian Mahinmi, but that's a huge contract for a guy who's accomplished as little as he has.  Centers always seem to get big contracts.

If you sign a young player as a free agent, you're usually paying based on potential rather than established performance.  That's why signing a 25-year-old to a full MLE contract is often a deal that doesn't work out.
