Also one thing to mindful of with Melo is that while he didnt average over 10 and 6 he did show great improvement between year 1 and year 2

Year 1 -  2.3 ppg, 1.9 rpg, .8 blk 36% ft

Year 2 -  7.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 2.9 blk 63% ft

Thats pretty impressive

Can someone name for me the last center that couldn't average 10 PPG or 6 RPG in college that became anything but a bust in the NBA?

Even just one player?

Can anyone name me another player that got into trouble while playing for Cuse?  I mean Devendorf punched a woman in the face for crying out loud.

I don't want to remotely sound like I'm defending Eric Devendorf or physical altercations with women, because they're both pretty despicable, but Devendorf was suspended for 3 weeks, and escaped more punishment because he didn't actually punch the woman.

You guys aren't making feel really good about this pick. Anthony, Dalembert, Jordan, a great player from 25 years ago. Hibbert is the only name that I like and Rondo kinda used his career stats instead of his last year stats.

Anthony, Dalembert and Jordan might be three of the most over rated scrubs in the league but then again, that's just my opinion.

love the bust claim on 10/6 college stats...

you've got back multiple pages of $10M guys & a max contract all star.  yet you still don't like Fab for $1M...

don't worry, there's still time for you to come around.
just wait til he starts scrimaging KG every day...

Fab = 2 blocks & 20mpg by xmas.  book it.

Haha ya, Hibberts stats were skewed, but still he wasnt a dominant rebounder in the big east.

That's xmas 2013, right? Because he is probably going to be in the D-League come xmas 2012. ;D

Seriously hope I am wrong and he grows a pair of hands and isn't as much of a dope as I have heard. I seriously hope I am wrong and he becomes something. I really do.

One thing I know I won't be wrong on is his contributions this year. They will be close to nothing. This is his learning year and playing time won't be part of that.

So we should have got PJIII instead?

PJ3 looked good against us and so did Plumlee.  Athletic guys can play right out of the gate.

I see some potential in Melo, I was totally against the pick but I see a lot of flaws too.  He is a neophyte on the court and his hands are suspect.   I think improving them would help him immensely.  I wish we had that Big Man specialist coach on our roster to develop them.  Clifford Ray though isn't probably going to walk in that door.  But we need one for Melo, I think.

True enough.   He needs work.  Fab = a lump of clay that needed sculpted.

  • It's what I do! It's who I am!
He really looks lost in summer league. He has his moments where he makes a nice pass or block, but in general I can't see him getting any playing time this year.

In general, I don't like projects that project to be good NBA players based on size and athleticism.  That's what led us to the Jeromoe Moisos, Kedrick Browns, and J.R. Giddenses of the world.

Still, if there's anyone to train someone on the job, it's KG.  So I think that had a large role in DA making this choice.  If KG was going to leave or retire, I don't know if DA makes this move.

As for PJIII, some scouting reports talked about him coasting during some games and potentially not putting forth his best effort.  While PJIII may be ahead of Fab Melo, that certainly wouldn't have flown with KG.  And given KG's history of not only hating, but shunning players like that (Paddy), I think that might have dissuaded Danny from rolling the dice on him, despite his talent.

Melo's project status is not solely based on size and athleticism. I've seen some real defensive skills on scouting tapes (moves well to take charges, has good sense about stepping up to block shots). Also, he's shown a jumper and some passing ability in summer league.

Overall, a good gamble to take, I think. If he pans out, he may be a very, very valuable piece for a long time.
