If Brand and his agent let it known he will not play for any team that claims him, Chauncey Billups style (before clips talked to him), it is very possible they could get Brand.

I disagree with this.  A team with cap space would still put in a minimum salary claim.  If I ran the Bobcats, Kings, etc... I would.

If Brand stated he would not play for any team that claims him, I dont see any teams making a claim based on that statement. I guess the Bobcats or Kings could make a claim and just avoid Brand and fine him for every missed game, practice etc, to eventually make a profit. (salary claim - fines) but that has about a .0001 chance of happening and then you have the players union involved and bad PR. Soon congress is called in and the CBA is voided and there you go the NBA is locked out again.

Im joking of course but seriously no team would put a bid on a guy who says publicly he wont play for them.

An official NBA statement from when Billups said he wouldn't play for any team that claimed him:

Quote
The league warned Billups and his agent, Andy Miller, on Monday that any statements made concerning not reporting to a team or being disruptive would be viewed as a breach of Billups’ contract, and that the NBA “is reserving all of its rights to take appropriate action against the player for his efforts to undermine the waiver process and the contractual rights of both the waiving team and any claiming team. Please also be advised that the NBA will fully support any team that claims Mr. Billups’ contract in the amnesty/waiver process and that subsequently believes it has grounds for discipline of Mr. Billups for breach of that contract.”

Elton Brand is smart enough not to breach an $18 million contract.  He'd play out the year for whomever claimed him and then hit free agency.  Keep in mind, he only has one year left.

The source is the NBA's website and an official NBA statement.

Impressive sir, you win. TP

Naw, in keeping Brand away from Miami, we both win, lol.

I get your point about bringing in an unhappy player, but I think at $18 million Brand would get over it and play. And help a team like Sacramento or Charlotte.

I believe if Brand is claimed, then the claiming team must take on his full contract.  Not a friendly contract, so most likely he goes unclaimed.  At that point he is still owned all the money on his contract from the 76ers, and he signs for a veteran minimum deal wherever.  That's what happend with Rashard Lewis and Gilbert Arenas.

No, it isn't.

Rashard was cut because part of his contract was non-guaranteed. He was not an amnesty cut.

Gilbert went unclaimed because he stinks.

Chauncey Billups was claimed by the Clippers for $2 million.  They only paid $2 million while the Knicks paid the rest.

Quote
The league's 30 teams were notified shortly after 6 p.m. ET on Monday that the Clippers had lodged the winning waiver bid for Billups, who was released Friday by the New York Knicks through the amnesty clause in the NBA's new labor agreement.

One source with knowledge of the deal told ESPN.com that the Clippers' winning bid to land Billups in the waiver auction was just over $2 million, meaning that the Knicks will still have to pay out the remaining balance of nearly $12 million from Billups' $14.2 million salary this season.

Elton Brand will be up for bid for all teams under the cap.  If you put in a small bid, you get him and the 76ers pay the rest.  If he goes unclaimed, he is a free agent.  He will not go unclaimed.

Where is the money coming from
Im wondering that myself with the big contracts of Bosh, James, and Wade

All things are possible when you sign for less money...

Look at KG....I think (I could be wrong)...LeBron only makes 3 mill more than him....Imagine if KG took less.

We need Kwame, and we can offer the BAE. He almost came here instead of JO but wanted too much money. I don't see him going to Miami for the vet min. He's not old or broken down.
