Not so Fab Melo

regardless of how he plays in the summer league, i bet he is already a better defender in the low post for us than hollins and sean williams and jo this past year.

Now is not the time to judge Melo. He's got the body and raw skill. Centers take a few years to develop. He shouldn't be expected to play anything more than emergency or garbage minutes this year.

Perry Jones was everything that I thought he would be: talented as heck, athletic and sooo smooth. But this actually made me feel better about the Fab Melo pick. I still would've preferred Jones, but Melo looked much better than I thought. His pick and roll defense was very impressive. If he could learn to rebound better, he could be a contributor pretty soon.

I preferred PJ3 also, but with Sullinger and Green, it made more sense for DA to draft for position. Melo is an interesting combination of size and athleticism.  I liked the way he moved defensively in his first game. 

Melo is working with the best basketball skills trainer in the business.  I expect him to be a lot better offensive player once the seasons starts.  Defensively, he has the instincts to be a good rim protector, and also should be a good cover guy on pick/roll. 

Melo, Sully, Green, AB, and Rondo is a nice young core with decent positional balance, and if Joseph becomes an NBA player it will be even more balanced.  I'm over them not grabbing Jones.

Look, everybody knows Jones is a better offensive player than Melo. Jones has all the "tools" to be lotto good, his attitude, er "knee" is what made him drop so far. A bunch of GM's are going to be kicking themselves for passing on him especially if it turns out that his "knee" is better than they thought...Danny included, but still..it's just one game.

Melo impressed me today. He hit a 15 ft jump shot and looked good doing it. He blocked 2 (I think it was more), and bothered several more, shots. He played defense. He ran the court. He has quick feet and gave good effort from start to finish. His play improved minute by minute he was in the game. Yes, he has a long way to go and he might not ever get there, but I'm not regretting the pick. Not yet.

PJ III is so over rated.  Seriously the guy had ONE nice stretch where he made a series of jumpers and was physical.  He disappeared for the rest of the game.  He scored 16 points in 17 shots?  He's exactly the same player he's been his whole life.  That's why 27 teams passed on him.

I also didnt love the pick but watching him in the summer league game I understand why he was drafted. He physically is a top 10 pick in any draft. His skill set is very raw, but so was Perks when he was drafted in the 20s. With development Fab has the physical tools to be a big athletic defensive anchor. Possibly a poor mans Tyson Chandler.

i agree with #1 above.

as for #4 i believe the concern over jones was not about his ability, every GM seemed to know he has that....yet all but one passed. i believe the problem was his health, specifically his knees were areas of concern. seems as if nba GM worried jones might wind up similar to brandon roy.

also on #1 above, let's wait and see onmelo.  just for comparison here are perk's stats for his first three years. i posted these before, but they are interesting when we evaluate melo.

basically, perk was nobody until year 3, when he was merely mediocre. i think melo may turn out to be better....IF he can learn team defense. i have doubts about him, but am willing to wait and see.
