That's going to be a nice $9M expiring contract that could be used to facilitate a deal for a superstar. Remember Wally and Theo helped land Ray and KG. Think ahead folks.

1. Expiring contracts are a bit overrated;

2.  Potentially having dead weight to trade in four years isn't a good reason to give a fourth year; and

3.  If this was Danny's intent, he should have made the fourth year non-guaranteed.

The Green contract may work out, but I think we need to look at it as paying for potential, rather than the silver lining of a potential trade chip if things don't work out.

Yeah, in the NBA now, teams much prefer to deal with trade exceptions, teams with cap space, and non-guaranteed contracts so that they don't have to take salary back.

The importance of expiring contracts has diminished greatly.

I just find it interesting that everyone is on 2-3 year deals and he's the only one that got a 4th year. Honestly I think Ainge is really high on the guy and thinks it will work out.

I think that's the answer.  Danny really likes Green, and wants him locked out as long as possible, while still keeping some flexibility by not giving him a fifth year.
