I don't know much about the cap rules, but It seems like the Nets are on their way to basically saying to heck with the salary cap and incurring the league penalty. What is the penalty and why can't the C's just follow suit?

This year, it's $1 in tax for every $1 spent above the tax line.

In future years, the tax penalties increase sharply.  See the table here:

Yeah, always useful to see this.

The thing to keep in mind with this is that when the Celtics give out contracts this offseason, they are not just thinking about what they will be paying *this year*, but what they might be paying *next year*.  This is a sort of bridge year, with huge penalties going into effect next year.
Celtics fan for life.

THe LAkers do it like every year don't they  ??? ???

I mean , the FAKERS and HEAT push every button to win.... bent every rule to the max....use every angle.

That greasy haired witch doctor Riley will pull any stunt to win.

Maybe the Celtics owner needs to think the same way.

The Lakers are separate and apart from any other franchise; their $200 million cable contract is unmatched by any other franchise.

Well, in terms of this year, we can't pass 74 mil and still sign Terry.  And again, the easiest way to go far over the cap is to overpay your existing players.  No need to do that.

Because if you go into the Luxury tax you have to pay a certain amount of money for that privilege.

You can go over the salary cap and still have the MLE available to use, but if you go into the Luxury Tax which is set at about $70 million then you have to pay for that privilege

Its $ for $ at the moment, but in a few years time it gets really harsh.

Teams that continue to go into the Luxury Tax will have to pay even more, It go's up to like $4.25 per dollar your over or something like that for repeating teams.

Like I said its harsh
