Orlando is to receive Gustavo Ayon (and a large TE) in exchange.

Source confirms New Orleans is "close" to landing restricted free agent F Ryan Anderson in a sign-and-trade with Orlando for Gustavo Ayon.

Wojo is also reporting the S&T, but not what Orlando is getting in return.

Wow -- surprised Orlando has gotten so little back for him.

Edit: Oh, trade exception. That could be useful. Be interested what size it is.

Unless a draft pick is going to Orlando, I would have either played hard ball with Anderson and kept him, or just let New Orleans take the extra cap hit. Ayon is not fair value for Anderson.

Edit: Missed the TE.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who missed that.

I wonder if they have a plan to bring in a player with a big trade exception in hopes of making Howard happy?

Ayon's not making much this coming season, only $1.5 mil, and it's fully non-guaranteed before July 25. So it could be a sizable TE.

Perhaps this report is an attempt to get another team (Sacramento?) to up the ante, so to speak.

That sounds like a terrible package for him. I mean, he's not a superstar by any means but I would at least think they'd try to get back Greivas Vasquez.

Also, why do the hornets want a starting caliber PF when they have Anthony Davis?

Weird trade all around, imo.

Ha, I was thinking the same thing when I saw your post!  ;)

Completely missed it the first time around.

Ryan Anderson would be a base year compensation player, is that right?

How does that effect the trade exception? Will that slice it in half and leave Orlando with a $3-4 million trade exception? Instead of say a $7-9 million one?

I'd imagine that New Orleans would be planning to rotate Davis, Anderson and whoever they start at C to get a shooter on the court.

Maybe they are planning on Anthony Davis playing the center position.

Personally, I think it's best position in the NBA in the long term. However, I would start him off at PF for his season or two before switching him there full time. Probably 70% minutes at PF and 30% minutes at C in the second unit.

I liked Carl Landry alongside him more than Ryan Anderson though. Post-scoring over floor spacing. Shot-creator vs someone who needs shots created for him. I thought that type of offensive weapon was more valuable alongside a player like Davis (more of a facilitator than scorer + spends a lot of time in the high post as a passer).

I am surprised not to hear more about them keeping Chris Kaman on a short-term deal.

It sounded like they were pretty interested in keeping him late last season + after the Okafor trade, minutes were cleared right up for him.

You're right, Anderson would have BYC status.

http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q86

Quote
The 2011 CBA mostly eliminated BYC -- in fact, the term "Base Year Compensation" was removed from the agreement entirely. The rules formerly known as BYC now apply under just one circumstance -- during sign-and-trade transactions (see question number 88). If a team is over the cap and re-signs its Larry Bird or Early Bird free agent with a raise greater than 20%, in order to trade the player in a sign-and-trade arrangement, then the player's outgoing salary for trade purposes is either his previous salary or 50% of his new salary, whichever is greater. The team receiving the player always uses his new salary.

For example, a player made $5 million last season, is a Larry Bird free agent, and re-signs with his previous team (which is a taxpayer and therefore well over the cap) for $10 million. The signing is part of a sign-and-trade with another team, for that team's $10 million player. Since the conditions were satisfied the player's outgoing salary for trade purposes is $5 million. This trade would not be allowed, even though the players' new salaries match, since a taxpaying team cannot trade a $5 million player for a $10 million player. The highest salary this team could acquire in a sign-and-trade arrangement is $6.35 million1.

Once a sign-and-trade is complete, the player's actual salary is included in his new team's team salary.

In lieu of the previous BYC rules for ordinary trades, teams are now prohibited from trading players for three months or until January 15 (whichever is later) when the signing satisfies the BYC critieria2 (see question number 97).
1    The sides also might be able to complete this trade if they both add additional salary to the transaction, or if they include a third team that is able to absorb excess salary.
2    Minimum salary contracts are excluded from these rules.

So, it's likely that Anderson's outgoing salary would be much less than the first year of his new contract, which would seriously reduce the size of the TE.

Interesting. I guess if they're see Davis as a center, it works. Davis doesn't have an offensive game yet, so bringing in a front court player who can make an impact on the offensive end would make sense.

John Hollinger: Hornets would presumably renounce Kaman, Landry and Belinelli in order to have room for Ryan Anderson.

NOH will have to clear some space.  This may move things along in where Kaman ends up.
