I have to laugh at some of you saying this is terrible.  Do you pay attention to the other signings around the NBA?

Ersan Ilyasova is about to sign a 5 year, $45 million dollar deal to stay in Milwaukee.

I think 4/$36 mil for Green is probably where he should be. Perhaps a little high, but not egregiously so.

Exactly.  The Wallace for 4/40 is also one that was just signed and that dude is 30.

Not saying that totally justifies it because that Wallace signing was stupid but at the same time this isn't a bad signing, it's just not.

I think 8 mill per would of been great but 1 mill more than that doesn't make it a bad contract.

Agree - but we're clear of that, we have $67m in salaries excluding cap holds, but including JET's deal. I think you don't actually have to renounce guys if they are cap holds to be under the Apron - i.e. only contracted salaries are in. Again don't know this new CBA as well as old one, so not 100% on this point.

This is correct.

Green has never graded out as anything other than a borderline NBA starter.

Green's career PER would have put him at 32nd last year. Here are the 5 guys right above and below him:

27   Kyle Korver
28   Alonzo Gee
29   Terrence Williams
30   Michael Beasley
31   Tayshaun Prince
32   C.J. Miles
33   Linas Kleiza
34   Reggie Williams
35   Grant Hill
36   Donte Greene

Everything about him screams "mediocre." I have no idea why he is getting paid star money.

The only thing I would say in favor of Green is that he is 25 and yet to hit is prime as an NBA player.  If his PER stays in the same range then yes he will never be a special player.  But sometimes average NBA guys make a lot of money.

I think the one thing people keep forgetting is that Green is a flexible 3/4 with a versatile game.  You are kind of paying for 2 players in one if you think about it that way.

I'm a little confused by the reported numbers here.  Contract is for $36m total, but also starts at $9m.  That's too high of a starting value, unless he's not getting annual raises.  Straight across the board contracts aren't very common.

Seems a little wierd to me, I would think it would be in the C's best interest to keep the starting value a little lower, and get to $36m by giving raises.  I wonder which side preferred to keep all years at the same value?

Green has never graded out as anything other than a borderline NBA starter. His numbers have been inflated by the fact that he played a lot of minutes per game.

I know that PER is not everyone's favorite stat, but it is OK. It grades the top SFs in the league last year as James, Durant, Anthony, Pierce, Granger, Iggy and Batum in that order. Perfectly sensible.

1.  9 mil a year really isn't star money.

2.  You generally have to pay more for mediocre than flat out bad.

3.  You usually have to overpay when you don't have any other options.  There is no one even close to Green's level as a player that Boston could possibly bring in.

Well, OK, let's look at the salaries of the guys on that list:
Korver $5 million
Gee $884,000
Williams $194,000
Beasley $6.2 million
Prince $6.2 million
Miles $3.7 million
Kleiza $4.6 million
Williams $2.5 million
Hill $6.5 million
Green $1.7 million

That's an average of $3.75 million, and no other player is within $2.5 million of Green's salary.

Green is now far overpaid for his performance.

First, he's not far overpaid in a league where Hill and Beasley are getting over 6 million each.

Second, if not Green...who?  What other player on his level does Boston have even a chance to sign?

Blindly looking at PER without considering the factors that surround the players on the team and their role in the team is silly.

The fact that a guy like Gee is being considered better or his equal?  Yeah...

Everyone trusts and loves Danny Ainge except on this deal.  Apparently when he looks at Green he turns into an idiot I guess.

It's too early to judge this as a bad contract for Green. Yea, he's unproven because of heart surgery and missing an entire year.

However, a full training camp under his belt and time to get the chemistry down with the team, his contract could turn into a steal.

Can't say I'm thrilled with the idea of paying Green this much for 4 years, but it ain't my money either.  The contract really isn't going to hamper the C's or prevent them from adding any other players of significance.

I will say though, with Green getting this much money, he will now be expected to live up to it.  Definitely will be a watershed moment in his career.

It's all on you you now, Jeff.  So, what are you going to do?
