An obvious move for the Celtics would be to turn around and consider re-signing Mickael Pietrus to add depth at the swingman spot. Pietrus played last season on a minimum contract after facilitating a buyout with the Phoenix Suns. Not owning Pietrus' Bird rights, the Celtics can only offer a marginal salary boost.

A source close to Pietrus said Friday that, at the moment, he was unlikely to accept the bi-annual exception given the interest that exists from other teams. Now, Pietrus has expressed a strong desire to return to Boston and -- without Allen in the picture -- he might reconsider, particularly coming off knee surgery with a chance to reestablish his value on a short-term deal.

But it just hammers home the difficulty Boston faces trying to add talent to their bench. Not only don't they have Allen back, but they cannot easily add another bench asset in his place.

Well that sucks. He's pretty key with Ray gone.

That is to be expected.

I was shocked he was willing to come here last season for such a small contract. Too good a player to be playing for $1-2 million per annum.

He is waiting for the 1st round of FA to clear to see if team left out with cap space will come see him.

If not, Boston is a great choice to him for a one year deal now that Ray is gone (and he can get minutes)

Interesting that this is coming out now, when all expectations up to this point have been that Peaches would be willing to stay in Boston for less than his potential market value.

Well with Ray, where there was smoke there was fire.  Let's not hope it's the same with Peaches.  While not the most heads up player out there, he can stretch the floor and play some D.

Who should we get then?

Brandon Rush?
Nick Young?
Courtney Lee?

Can we afford them?

Or should we get Sasha Pavlovic...?

Yes. Pietrus should be worth 4 per year. It would be amazing if he came back.

this team went from having a nice chance at being deep to looking very suspect.

no ray
no pietrus

leaves you with 5 rookies (moore, joseph, sully, JJJ and melo)

no money to get depth up front and another wing

Yeah agreed... hope we can swing it on a short deal.

Let's not overreact...

Right now the Cs reportedly have 12 guys under contract:

Rondo
Bradley
Terry
Moore
Pierce
Green
Joseph
Bass
Sullinger
Johnson
Garnett
Williams

The missing depth is at the 1 and 5. The safe play may include:

Dooling
Stiemsma
Wilcox
Kristic

With Green back in the fold, Pietrus is expendable. I'd like him back at the right price, but there are other holes to fill. Don't forget that Wilcox was coming on before they discovered the heart ailment.
