This was brought up in another thread and it got me interested. The Mavs are most likely going to have to rebuild and Dirk is their cash cow to a faster rebuild.  He doesn't want to squander on a rebuilding team.

"He [Dirk} was asked if he could ever see a time when he would request a trade if the pieces didn't come together as planned."

"I’m not sure," Nowitzki, 34, said. "I’ve always said I want to finish my career here and obviously the championship season topped it all off; that’s what I always was chasing and dreaming about so that kind of sealed that deal on that front. If we really come out with nobody this summer then maybe they want to rebuild and, obviously, I’m too old for that. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens on that front. But I still think I got two, three good years left in me and if we get some players in here we can be right back up there and compete."

What does it take to land Dirk?

Same thing we used to get KG, lots of young talent with at least one player ready to start (Al Jefferson). Then add in all you upcoming draft picks.

We don't have the ammo. Bradley is a nice piece but he's not as valuable as a promising young big the way Al Jefferson was. No one wants late round picks (i.e. ours). And that is it, we simply can't get him. Don't mention our rookies b/c Dallas would have taken them if they wanted one of them that badly (they drafted ahead of us).

Dallas still has that cap space, they will likely use it to pull off an off-balanced trade.

He has a no trade clause.

Which it sounds like he'd waive if Dallas is going to re-build.

I think, he'll look for  a Steve nash deal,  he'll look around and see WHERE he wouldn't mind finishing his career and pick a already loaded contender.  I imagine , he'll take a boatload less so some intereste team can make room.
Again ..LA is king of the expensive top 5 -15 players , they have all the big money players to trade or sell.

I thin k the Bulls, Orlando if they get Bynum, LA gets rid of Gasol , he coulf find a spot easy

James and Wade will basically stalk him the next two years stalking Dirk, telling him the Mavs don't show him proper respect, his teammates don't give him the ball every time he's open and some of his teammates don't like him. He'll end up turning down a max extension with Dallas and signing for the BAE with Miami.

Are you guys serious?

Why on earth would anyone want Dirk in Boston??

Dirk is a 7-foot jump shooter who is a mediocre defender, a mediocre rebounder, and has minimal post presence.  In fact I widely consider him one of the most overrated players in the NBA - he's basically a 7 foot version of Ray Allen.

We already have two exceptional front court jump shooters in KG and Bass - why on earth would we want to add another old guy with a massive contract that does the same thing as two guys we already have?

If we do add any additional big man (and I pray we do) then we need someone who can rebound like a beast, and preferably defend like one too..and hopefully one without a massive contact.  Given our current team needs, I would take Marcus Camby, Spencer Hawes or Kris Humphries over Dirk in a heartbeat.

We don't have the ammo. Bradley is a nice piece but he's not as valuable as a promising young big the way Al Jefferson was.

No way in hell I'd give up one of our most promising young players (and one of the best perimeter defenders in the league) for a older guy who has a couple of years left in the tank.

The thing I love about what Ainge has done so far is that he's building the perfect ballance between young talent (Rondo, Bradley, Green, Bass, Melo, Sullinger) and proven veterans (KG, Pierce, Terry).  This approach allows us the opportunity to compete for a title right now, without really sacrificing our relevance in the future.

I don't mind getting an older big man as long as they 1. Fill a clear need, and
2. Don't require us to give up key pieces of our future

For example if we could get Marcus Camby (who solves our size, rebounding and interior defense problems) in return for any combinatin of Dooling/Moore/Williams/Joseph/Johnson/picks I'll take it. I don't see any of those guys as critical pieces nor or in the future, so I'm not afraid to give them up if it increases our chance to win right now.

However Rondo, Bradley, Green, Sullinger, Melo and KG are all guys that are off limits to me. The first 5 because they are (IMHO) our future, the last one because he is our present.

Pierce and Terry are guys I could give up if it's for the right piece, but it would have to be one hell of a piece.  I believe that with all of this youth, we really need at least 2 or 3 veteran guys who are proven performers on the big stage (Playoffs) and Pierce, Terry and KG give us that.

Bass is another one in the could trade, but I'd rather not category.  He's a relatively one dimensional player but he's also young, tough, athletic and more importantly efficient - he had one of the lowest tunover ratios in the league last season.   Still, if I get a chance for someone like Josh Smith in return, he's gone.

Not enough to justify trading him.

Let's be real here. If Dirk was actually someone we could get without giving up Rondo, Pierce or KG (He's not, so this is irrelevant) it would be foolish not to do so.

Donnie Nelson recently said that they have no intention of trading Dirk. They want him to end his career as a Mav.
