still unsure of the bench if they have to settle on pietrus to play heavy minutes at the 2...

and if ray walks..who plays the 2 while AB is out? I think they need terry off the bench...you can't start Pietrus at the 2 for months...just can't do it. you can't go with moore. he isn't nba starting talent..

do you play PP and the 2, start green at the 3 and let Pietrus back up green while jet backs up PP?

and if ray walks, I think boston needs to look at bringing dooling back. no ray means jet has to be your primary shooter off the bench and not the PG....

I don't believe the Celtics would have the 6 million to spend.

We have the 6 million to spend on our own free agents.

The upside - if there is one - of Ray not resigning with us is that the $6M we earmarked for him goes back into the pool from which Danny can spend on the rest of our roster from last year.

Not really.  We still need to be able to fit players into salary slots.  It might help a little with a guy like Krystic (that we have the Bird rights to, although I don't get the recent infatuation with him), but it won't help us to re-sign guys like Stiemer where we don't have Bird rights.  They've got to fit into one of the exemptions, or be signed at minimum contracts.

I was REALLY hoping the last CBA negotiations would have resulted in a simpler, cleaner free agency system (hard cap, no exemptions, no "Bird Rights," no "Early Bird Rights"), but alas...

I actually like having Green and Pierce at the 2/3 even once Bradley returns. It makes it tough defensively on teams because both are big and Green, in particular, has a good back to the basket game.

Something like this is what I'm thinking with no Allen:

PF- Bass
SF- Green
C- KG
PG- Rondo
SG- Pierce

PF- Sullinger
SF- Pietrus (BAE)
C- Wilcox (vet min.)
PG- Bradley (will share ball handling duties with Terry)
SG- Terry

I think he will as well. Rondo and Doc love him.

We don't have cap space to sign Mayo, and there's no realistic sign-and-trade for him, either.  The only reason we can offer Ray $6 million per season is because we can exceed the cap because we have his "Bird Rights".

Exactly.  And therein lies the problem that some fans that are dismissing Allen are overlooking: this isn't a matter of Ray Allen vs. another good free agent.  This is a matter of Ray Allen vs. a minimum level guy.

And that's a big difference.

And perhaps even worse, Ray Allen and giving Jeff Green some extra money (ick).

Well that remains to be seen.  I don't like the 4 year 40 million dollar deal, but I'm also not the one paying it.  And for as bad as it sounds, it's not like it's much worse than a 4 year 32 million dollar deal that some people seem to be OK with (yes, I'm rationalizing a bit).

To me, it's not so much about the average annual salary, it's the years.  If they're going to give him 10 million a year, I'd at least like to see it limited to 3 years to line up with KG and Bass.

I'm surprised Tanguay is so clueless on these things.

I am double checking but I think soRT @manfurlei: @Gary_Tanguay Gary if Ray signs with Heat, the Celtics can't use that 6 million on another player right?

b/c its best not to start a player that is going to have to fit into a bench role later, messes up the system and their groove/rhythm

I'd rather Pierce slide to the 2,Green 3 and run that. Green needs to the time/exp to get back into the game. Either that or start Pietrus since he'll end up playing a Marquis role this year as the backup bench glue guy IMO
Can't stop, Rondo!
