the team was a championship team in 2011, then right after summer he lets almost every cog to that run go..chandler, JJ barea, deshawn stevenson

the team then becomes 7th seed 1st round sweep fodder..

now, Terry is gone(although im happy ;D) and likely Kidd goes to the nets. dirk probably has 2-3 good years left and Cuban has just wasted it...barring any big moves, the mavs arent going anywhere next year..

I guess it shows how futile renouncing your fa's to chase after the possibility a superstar will join you is futile...more often than not you are left standing at the alter empty handed.

They need to get Steve Nash. Otherwise, they'll be in trouble.

Simple.

Maintaining flexibility by not investing long-term in older players.

Probably should've resigned Chandler after the championship but at this point letting older guys go is smart, imo.

Yeah but chandler got a huge contract.  As the second best player (which he would have been) he isn't worth that contract.  Not enough scoring and really not a great rebounder (though an excellent defender).  He isn't a role player, but he isn't much more than that, so they couldn't give him that sort of contract to be the second best player on the team (on the Knicks he is the third best player, which is better).
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

I'd consider signing Dragic and Nick Young.

PG: Kidd, Dragic
SG: N.Young, V.Carter
SF: S.Marion,
PF: Dirk
C:  B.Haywood,

Need a high quality backup big man. A Carl Landry type would be very nice. Not sure if they have enough money for Landry, Dragic and N.Young without losing Haywood/Marion though.

Dragic will not sign to be a backup, he will start wherever he signs. Kidd also said he wants to backup Deron in NJ.

I still think the mavs signing Dragic and Young would be a great idea though.

The mavs are loosing out in the free agent big fish market and it really surprises me. For a guy like Cuban who throw his money around to keep loosing out on the big names really surprises me.

Took a gamble on landing his next franchise player (Deron Williams) and it just didn't work out. Considering it would have put them right back in the top 4 out west and set them up for a DH12 signing in 2013 I think it was worthwhile.

Question is how do you move forward? Amnesty Haywood, renounce everyone and try and land another star in a lopsided trade? Gasol, Igoudala & Gay are available for salary dumps.

Or do you try and *gasp* trade Dirk for future assets?

I bet the Mavs have a big move left in them by using the cap space they created to land an overpaid star and make another run.

I think Dragic would be happy enough signing with the understanding that he would be handed Kidd's starting role in the near future. Either before the end of this season or next year. In the meantime, he'll be a 30+mpg backup.

I don't think that would be an issue for him. I'm sure Dallas could talk Dragic around and convince him to do it.

I'd be a little worried about Dragic and Nick Young starting together. Nick Young is erratic and shot-happy. Dragic is a weak floor leader. Not much help from Marion/Haywood either. Lot of pressure on the PG there. Having someone with Kidd's intelligence and floor game to help smooth the transition would be wonderful for Dallas. That's the reason I'd like to both keep Kidd + bring Dragic off the bench initially.

Letting older players go is only smart if you've got someone to replace them that will make you a better team.  I would argue that most times, resigning an older player for less money and fewer years is better than grabbing an equivalent younger player on a bigger and longer contract.  I used this example in another thread.  Would you rather have Jason Terry at 3 years, 15 million or OJ Mayo at 4 years, 40+ million?

Cuban gambled he could strike it rich in FA and it appears he lost, big time.

Unless he can work some magic here in the next year he may be forced to get whatever assets he can for Dirk and start to rebuild.  Don't know how well that is going to go over down there though.

This makes sense to me, Kidd would be a great teacher for Dragic, I just don't see Dragic accepting a backup role, even with a promise of starting later on though, and Kidd has stated he wants to backup Deron wherever he goes, which is now Brooklyn.

Rondo, Sullinger, and Melo for Dirk?
