Can't for the life of me figure why Gordon would want to play in Phoenix ...

Max money, and a medical staff that has done very well with injured players?

Yup. And hey, Arizona is a [dang] nice state. Maybe he just wants to live there who knows. Big contract for phoenix to give a guy who still hasnt really  proven himself fully IMO. He could think of himself as being the face of the franchise if he heads to Phoenix and Nash is gone. Tough situation either way for him. NO and Phoenix arent looking bright for the immediate future.

Really bad signing by Phoenix. I believe they are overpaying Gordon. Too bad NO is planning to match.

I wouldn't match this if I was NO, use that remaining cap to bolster the bench.

While they won't be a contender with Austin and Anthony Davis right now, they will be in the future. Why not have a pretty solid bench to bring along with it while you're at it.

I mean Gordon is good, very good. But I'd rather have Jarret Jack and a couple of solid bench players and make Austin (while not as good) as the primary scorer. Helps his development faster too.

I think the whole "max contract" thing is getting overblown here because of that word.

The thing to remember is that the new luxury tax is really going to be a problem for every team not owned by a billionaire.  Max deals now won't just be salary cap problems that prevent you from making trades or other deals.  Mistakes with big contracts could now possibly affect the bottom line of whether or not a franchise turns a profit.

Except Johnson is more talented and wasn't insanely injury prone.

Really do not understand the hype for Gordon.  He's a constantly injured player who hasn't really done anything but play on a mediocre team.

I'd definitely match this if I were New Orleans.

Eric Gordon is a very good complementary star to Anthony Davis' lead. A great fit there.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
It's a great idea for NO to match, but I would certainly consider a trade if I were them. Rivers and Gordon seem to be a bit redundant and it may be better to bring in a solid forward (Josh Smith) in a trade. I know that NO plans on forcing Rivers into the pg spot, but that probably won't pan out extremely well and Jack is very capable as it is.

Either way, smart move by NO to match the offer, though.

I see him and Rivers kind of the same. Not the same game, but the same mentality. I see it as Gordon hindering Rivers' development ala Monta does with Steph.

I agree that Eric Gordon is a very good complimentary. But with this amount of money to use on him, when they have basically the same player for less for about 3 years, I'd rather use that cap room for depth. They'd probably be in the middle lottery for a while, but that means more lottery picks. Eventually they'll have Rivers, Davis, a lottery pick and with that and already solid bench. They'll be good in the next few years.

That's a lot of faith in Austin Rivers.

Personally, I struggle to see Rivers making it in the NBA as a starting two. He is just too small (and lacking in elite athleticism) and too limited as a defender/rebounder.

Austin Rivers' presence on the team wouldn't effect my decision to re-sign or not re-sign Eric Gordon at all. For me to let E.Gordon go for a prospect, he'd need to be a can't-miss-star. Too talented a player and too good a fit alongside Anthony Davis for anything less.

NO should strongly consider letting Gordon go and taking back some talent from the Suns - Dudley, Aaron Brooks, and Robin Lopez, for example.

Gordon's missed 113 games the past three seasons, sobering for a player age 21 to 23.  He doesn't do much more than shoot and score well.
