He is relatively smart - high SATs for example.

He has some good bball instincts and some bad. He naturally knows how to block shots. But his positioning, etc. have never been great. And for the natural skills he does have and the high IQ, he has never been a student of the game, the way Jared Dudley is.

That being said I like him a lot as an end of the bench guy on the C's. His salary might be more valuable in a sign and trade though.

I'd be surprised if he makes the roster.  I think Danny signed him as a fallback in case we struck out in free agency.

I agree.  If anyone were excited about him, we'd be hearing about it by now.  But neither player, nor coach, nor GM mentions him as part of their future.

Why would anyone talk about a guy on a non-guaranteed contract? He is already signed, and nothing happens with him until after Summer League, when he might be waived.
Because he's a local product and he's on the Celtics, and it's the offseason... and this is Celticsblog - home of 70 page threas about the 13th man on 1994 Roster (I kid, but only a little.)

Obviously he should be all over the Celticsblog, but he is probably litterally the last player on Danny's list.

He has proven to be an extra body, nothing more.

I will only remember Sean Williams for being super stoned, living the dream on the bench during the playoffs this year. He's NEVER been that happy in his life.
My pic is now, and will be Fab Melo until he posts his first official NBA dbl-dbl. This may be permanent.

He might also be used in conjunction with Moore and maybe a minor asset (like that Charlotte pick we got from OKC) to add a reliable veteran to the end of the bench: somebody like Earl Watson or Kurt Thomas
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson
C: Yao Ming/Pau Gasol/Tyson Chandler

Did you just say that Sean Williams was high while sitting on the bench during the playoffs?  That sounds like a pretty interesting story.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
I would definitely like to see what he's got, but there's simply no need for him. That's assuming we bring back Green and Bass. That would leave us with 4 legit PF's(Garnett, Bass, Sullinger & Johnson) and a SF who will likely get minutes there. I don't want to throw Johnson under the bus, but Johnson although older is a much more interesting prospect to me.

If someone who had never watched the NBA came to this site, they would leave with the impression that the 2006-2007 Celtics were the greatest team of all time and Danny Ainge was a fool to break them up.

I think we're all overlooking him. Personal issues have gotten the best of his career so far.

High basketball IQ. Plays defense. Athletic.

Last year, he was playing off pure instinct. No plays. Not even a defensive scheme.

He can easily be the next Stiemsma for us, possibly more.

Hopefully Stiems stays, Williams pans out and we get an insane shotblocking duo off the bench.

Sean Williams does not have a high basketball IQ IMO.

Agreed.  His floor position, even at BC, was terrible.

He cares more about making highlight reel blocks than he does making fundamental defensive plays.

When players make highlight reel blocks it is usually because they feel confident in the play they are making.  The task of the coaches is to help transfer that confidence to other areas on the court.  If Williams hustles, plays defense, rebounds and runs the court well, that would be enough to fill a real void the Celtics have.  Especially with REBOUNDING.

The fact that Williams didn't garner any playing time tells us one of two things.  He was out of shape or he couldn't grasp the defensive schemes.  During the offseason those things are his responsiblity.

I think he will be given every opportunity to earn a spot.  Clearly, Danny knows what the potential upside is.  However, to date, Williams hasn't done that.

I think you are right when you say that he could be better than Stiesma.  However, there have been alot of failed NBA players who were more talented than the ones that lasted in the league.

Talent gets you drafted.  Discipline and hard work make you part of a team.

Wow I'm not saying he's the next big thing...

Stiemsma was a 3rd string center (forced into a slightly bigger role) and great at that. I'm pretty sure Sean Williams can bring that right now (and even play out of position at C) with less weaknesses and more athleticism.

Stiemsma might be overpaid by the Wolves.

Edit: also Bass wants a big contract

Plus he looks like Robert Parish's white twin.
