Yeah, we overpaid for KG, Yeah, Ray Allen for 6M is too much. Houston just destroyed the market for backup centers. Every backup unathletic 7-foot stiff will be asking for Asik money now.

Hibbert getting the max, Asik getting 8M. This shows you what a high premium is put on youth. KG 11M, Nash 12M, Ray 6M...Amazed how far a dollar can get you for aging vets. In today's environment, smart GMs know this is where the true value is at. Draft well (Rondo, Avery, Sullinger?), pay for experience (KG, PP, Ray), trade for value contracts (Bass, Green) and it will yield results.

This is why drafting young bigs and picking up undersized ones and then spending on your other positions is usually a better idea.

There are bigs that are worth it don't get me wrong, but the market is just ridiculous sometimes.

It definitely shows you why Danny gambled on Melo in the draft.  Drafting a center is about the only way (outside of gambling on injured or old guys) you'll ever get them on a reasonable contract.

Teams always pay for size. It's why the Melo pick was so key. Try to get a decent young 7 footer on a decent FA contract, dare you. Heck Perk is making more than Asik will and he has been terrible for OKC. Homegrow your Centers, only way to go..

Steemer has got to be pretty excited now... that likely just upped his salary for next year.

No one should be shocked by this or any other signing.  Forget about overpaying, this IS the market.

I really hope not, I want to retain him but not for too much... I definitely hope Melo works out in the end

Today and Houston structured it for 25MM with a balloon in the third year of $14-15M.  Doubtful the Bulls can match that given their current cap issues.

Just think, if Fab Melo turns out to be worthwhile at all, we get to overpay him like this or watch him leave! Yay!

Yup, Danny saw this coming.

It complete explains the drafting of Melo.

True. Well said Sir Roy.

There's not a lot of solid centers offensive and/or defensive kinds out there that are very solid players, and teams are overpaying.

Best-case scenario may be to trade him the way Perkins was traded.

Exactly. I think Melo was a fab pick.
