Guys, I love Ray and KG, they have done a lot and they will still be effective, but locking them up til' they're 39? I mean it's Ray and KG so I'll be okay with it, but now we have interest in Crawford, Terry, and Rashard Lewis who are all 32+.  I was kind of hoping for younger/more athletic guys to run with Rondo/Avery, but we didn't do that in the draft and it seems like we're not doing that in Free Agency.

As of right now, we have six guys (Melo, Sullinger, Johnson, Moore, Bradley, Joseph) who are under the age of 24. That's 40% of what our roster will end up being. Last year, it was just three guys under the age of 24. I'd call that doubling up on youth. Danny is trying to strike a balance between building for the future and winning now.
2023 Historical Draft: Toronto Raptors

Point Guard: Anfernee Hardaway, Fat Lever, Terrell Brandon
Shooting Guard: Paul Westphal, Paul Pressey
Small Forward: Marques Johnson, Danny Granger
Power Forward: Jermaine O'Neal, Bobby Jones, Kiki Vandeweghe
Center: Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka

True, but the three new guys (in addition to the three last year) are all unproven draft picks. I do kind of agree with OP.

What exactly would the "Blow it Up" crowd like Ainge to do here?! How does giving a guy like Mayo 8 million a year help the Celtics in any way shape or form. The bench will probably be the youngest out of any of the contenders...you can't make everyone happy I guess

Yeah, it's hard to sit here seriously and say that Joseph and even Moore are definitely a part of our future, as late 2nd round picks. We also potentially have Steimsma and Hollins, but that is hardly the youth infusion that a lot of us were hoping for.

With all that being said, I am very excited to see what this team plus Jeff Green and Avery Bradley (and possibly an OJ Mayo type at the MLE), along with Sully, JJJ, and Melo can do. I get that we are older, but I am happy we still get to continue this run.

How many of these young guys will play a role? Who knows. We'll see what they do in practice and summer league but I think if we WANT to win, at least 2 or 3 need to step up. Which I think means we need to put them in the best position to help this team achieve its goals and not assume to sign older free agents to play over them.
Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity...

having guys who can play basketball is often better than having guys who can run really fast and jump really high.  KG and Ray can still play better than the majority of "young and athletic" players available.

Great idea. Let's get young athletic players who will help this team win less games. What's the obsession with getting more "athletic"? Yes, athleticism is important, but the players that we do get must first and foremost fit our system. We can't sign athletic players just for the sake of getting more athletic. We can't change our style of play. We can adjust, but the players that we should target must have 1)a high basketball IQ, 2)willingness to play defense, 3)team-first mindset. These things should be considered before pure athleticism. OKC are the most athletic team in the world. That up-tempo style doesn't work in the playoffs.

To me it's not so much about the age or athleticism of any pickups.

What we need to avoid are guys who are themselves injury-prone or out of shape. Looking back, this has been the curse of Danny's prize pickups (Sheed, JO, Shaq, etc).

With an old core we need supporting guys who will play 82 games and can start 10-15 games when the inevitable injuries hit during the season. Wasting another MLE on someone who plays 20 games is what we need to avoid.

So, Jason Terry, though 34 , is very durable and does not concern me as much as Rashard Lewis, who is very fragile at 32.

Exactly. WE ARE YOUNGER! If we get too young, we will suck. Young teams don't win championships, vet teams do. Just ask OKC.

Also, the free agent class sucks. Spending big money on guys like Hibbert and Mayo will guarantee that we don't contend for another 6-8 years at least.

We're likely to add Jeff Green and Jared Sullinger to our rotation, Bradley should be healthy next year, and we still may have the full MLE to add somebody.

That's younger and more athletic.

The primary goal is to win championships, not get younger, and DA and ownership believes the current approach is the best way to do so.

a key to getting more athletic will be getting Doc to play the rookies more. Summer League, a full training camp, and a normal regular season. we won't develop our own "Norio Colemers" as Simmons called the Heat duo until Doc buys into the program.

while Doc wants the rookies to earn their min, I think with the Championship 3 (4, pending Ray's decision) getting older he'll really have no choice but to start resting his regulars more (at least that's what I tell myself yr after yr)

I'm not sure how we go about getting younger and more athletic, but we do need to.

Maybe we can sign and trade Ray and/or Bass for someone that fits the bill.

Lets take a look at our young guys.
Sullinger - rookie, bad back, not athletic, best case scenario Doc plays him 8-10 mins a game.
Melo - project, doubt Doc plays him at all.
Green - coming off heart surgery, big questions.
Bradly - anyone else worried about this guy? Did he have both shoulders operated on? I only know 2 people that had shoulder surgery, one was mid 50's the other early 60's. I like the kid, he is to small to play 35 mins a game at SG though and worried about his durability.
