The problem with Ray isn't his shooting which he can still do at a very high level if he is healthy.

The issues are his inability to guard his position, his inability to create his own shot or shots for others, his penchant for bad turnovers because he doesn't have much of a handle anymore, his age and the fact he will be coming off another ankle surgery.

I love Ray Allen.  He is one of the classiest professional athletes in the world today.  His work ethic is unparalleled.  He is a great mentor for younger players but he isn't even the same player he was two years ago.

The question is how much of a discount is he willing to take and will he be happy with a greatly reduced role because we cannot win with Ray Allen starting an playing 32 minutes per game because he gives up more points then he gets at his current age and state of his game.

The biggest question is does he even want to return because if he doesn't then everything else is meaningless.

I think the Celtics would love to re-sign Ray allen. best 3 point shooter in the nba, clutch big-time shot maker, we can go over the cap to sign him.

but im not sure HE wants to stay here...theres the problem

hence why the C's are looking at Mayo, crawford, JET

Would be a great mistake if Ray don´t stay in Boston, Ray should retire with C´s, although Bradley starter, Ray will play very much.

I think 5-6 mil and off the bench is what the deal should be. KG took half of what he was making last year, Ray should do the same if they want to get pieces to help. They can't do it by them selves any more, its a win by community team now.

Ray already took a discount when he signed his last contract with us.

I agree with a lot of the posts here. I'd love to have him back in a bench role

I can totally understand him wanting to leave. He feels he is a starter, Danny has been peddling him for a year, and  there is (supposedly) friction between him and Rondo.

That said, count me in the camp that will be irked if he goes to Miami. I mean, some team out there is going to offer him the full midlevel, while Miami only has 3m/year to offer. So he'd be taking less money to go to the Celtics' biggest EC rival and the most hated team in the NBA. I would cease to be a Ray Allen fan at that moment.

I know it's a business, but come on!

would be hell of fun to kick his ass on the opposing team, hopefully he stays in the east so we woop his ass plenty of times.

hopefully he goes to the heat, it suits him and his personality, being wades backup(don't want to use another word to describe him).

I disagree.   Ray should be allowed to walk.  He was great first half of the season but vanished as the year went on.  I know he was injured but he was all over the place even before the injury.

This idea that everyone favorite player needs to retire a Celtic is a recipe for mediocrity.  Good teams with smart management don't hold on to players who can no longer perform up to the level expected of them.  I guess it depends on your expectations of a 37 year old Ray Allen and how much you think he is worth combined with how much he thinks he is worth and what role he is willing to play.

The idea that he needs to "retire a Celtic" though IMO isn't a stance a smart and successful GM should be taking.

boston has to get younger somewhere..it won't be for PP or KG....it is going to be for ray...rondo needs a young SG that can run and play his style

gah some people overrate 37 year old ray allen around here. I mean i love the guy but, i also like to think rationally. Allen is a role player now not a star. The C's Clearly want ray back but, want him to come off the bench and ray im pretty sure wants to start. If that's the case the C's should spend the money else where..

perspective, rationality and objectivity are missing here from plenty posts. good post though.
LET'S GO CELTICS!
