Assuming Ray comes back as is, a healthy AB, and none of them could be traded, how would you divide the playing time at guard among AB, Rondo, Ray, and DA?

To me this is such a tough decision:

AB improved so much last year and is clearly still getting better as a player.  His on the ball defense is well documented, and I would even argue that his team defense is elite and has the chance to be all world at the rate he is going.  Offensively, he can get his own shot and I think he is going to get a LOT better, although I doubt he'll ever be a great 3 point jump shooter like Ray.

DA in his prime was a 50% shooter, a proven scorer, a pesky defender, and perhaps most importantly he had the size to avoid inevitable defensive mismatches that arise from playing 2 small guys at the same time.

We all know where Ray is at this point in his career...most definetely still a capable part time scorer that would probably thrive in a limited role off the bench.

None of them is a point guard except Rondo.  You can get away with AB at the point in small stretches, maybe DA in smaller stretches, but not Ray.

What I would probably do is to start AB and bring DA off the bench as the 6th man.  I'd give AB minutes at the point, and DA would get most of the minutes in crunch time/end of game situations.  Ray would probably play 5-10 minutes a game in a limited role, but more when specific matchups warranted it.

I thought it was an interesting hypothetical, anyway.  What do you guys think?

That sure is one interesting question.

It's kind of funny though; in the midst of my absolute loathing of Danny as a GM, I sometimes forget he played here too.  And yes, he was a darn good player to boot.

Actually, now that I think of it, he was a fairly deecent coach for the Suns also.

As to the question, I have a question of my own.  What version of Ainge?  Boston Ainge, Sacramento Ainge, Portland Ainge or Phoenix Ainge?

he'd come off the bench but provide significant minutes.

I'd say his prime was Boston Celtics Ainge from around '84-86.

On this particular team, this coming year? Naw.

The same reason RayRayRay came off the bench: Defense and athleticism! And Avery Bradley has that.

Ainge was a decent defender in an era where defense wasn't overwhelmingly necessary like it is now.

Great offensive player, great 3 pt shooter even with the 3pt line as far back as it was. But he'd be a good 6th man, no doubt.
My pic is now, and will be Fab Melo until he posts his first official NBA dbl-dbl. This may be permanent.

Ainge would start and play around 38 minutes per in his prime. Bradley would backup Rondo, Ray would backup Ainge. Ainge will bring the ball up & play pg if Rondo is out of the game & Bradley/Allen in.

Smart basketball IQ, Underrated defender, outstanding shooter from the outside, all around team player. Perfect fit with the hall of famers on the roster.

You loath Danny as a GM?  Were you a Celtic fan prior to 2007?

Yeah, I think Danny in his prime starts.  He was basically putting up 16 points on 50% FG% / 40% 3PT% playing alongside four Hall of Famers.  He'd be a good effort defender, as well.

I love Bradley, but Danny would be more of a help for our offense, which is where we needed the most improvement.  He's stretch the floor, and would help with our ball movement, as well.

What Roy said.

Prime Ainge would get the nod over AB.

DAnny was alot of fun to watch.  He was quite a character , even comming out of college , he was in the news it seems everday .  He was a baseball player as well.

Not as many games were shown back then on TV, Only the big named teams , Celtics, Kicks ,76er's , Lakers , were shown alot, so I didn't know all the players on ther teams as well. He was a tall guard back then and could see the court and pass really well.

He was a high energy player, always wound up , emotional , and agresssive. He was a in your face player.  Probally would have been suspended or kicked out of many games into days NBA IMO

One of my all time favorite Celtics.

"Tree bites Man"...LOL!!

Also features our own Doc Rivers ;D

Any man that goes after someone twice his size like that gets many TPs and a starting job from me.

Ainge wouldn't take mess from anyone.

Ray is walking.  So maybe he could.  Depends on whether you favor shooting over defense.  That would let you choose between Danny or Avery.

No doubt he would start.....remember when he was paired with DJ, there was no distint PG....they were both guards and more important basketball players with cut-throat ability and high IQs
