If we do sign Ray, I think we are set at gaurd (Rondo, Ray, Bradley, Moore and then why not Dooling and Pietrus).

If we sign Green we are set at SF (Pierce, Green, Kris Joseph)

If we pass on Bass, we have quantity if not quality at PF (Garnett, Sullinger, Johnson, Williams) although with Green he can add some quality to the depth at PF.

So that leaves us at Center.  It seems to me that if we get Green, then we try and S&T Bass for someone better or more ready than Steisma/Mello/Hollins and keep the MLE for a rainy day or just use the MLE for a C.

If we sign Bass, that probably moves KG to C which may be OK but probably not better than if we get even a reasonably good Center.

I don't mind Bass at say $5m or $6M but the problem is that he is probably going to get 4 years.  I don't think we want Bass for 4 years.

I like Bass and would love to have him back at his player option number, but paying him 5 or 6 mill or signing him for 4 years doesnt make sense to me.  The opportunity cost is too high.

The way I see things is that we have enough room under the luxury tax to get 3 more quality guys and then fill out the roster.  So I would prefer Ray, Green, & a center (Camby, Kristic, or Kaman - in that order) then add Wilcox at a lower salary.  Wilcox can give us minutes at C, which is a big deal for me.

As for a sign and trade ... I cannot think of a team that needs a solid PF enough to give up piece that would help us.  So in my mind if we did a S&T it would need to be Bass packaged with someone else or to a team under the cap for a future pick.

Interested in other thoughts though

I'm pretty concerned about Bass. From Spears: While Celtics free agent Brandon Bass interested in re-signing, Pacers, Nets, Mavs, Heat (sign and trade), Knicks and Hawks intrigued too.

That's a lot of good teams that are interested and will drive his price up in this market. I'm hoping at the very least we could get some sort of sign and trade deal for him.

I think we have to let him walk.   He is great on offense but clearly had issues guarding bigs at times and is a subpar rebounder.    We need an interior four I think and one that can board.

Red's Army seems to think he'll be back soon. I think it might be a wait, as most of the other interest teams either don't have enough money (Miami, New York, etc) or have their eyes on bigger fish (Brooklyn, Dallas, etc).

Quote
Brandon Bass turned out to be a great addition to the Celtics in exchange for Glen Davis this past season… but his post season contribution can be accurately described as “spotty.”   So while we all know that Bass can be a pretty good contributor to the Celtics, there are flaws that he has.  Some say a sign-and-trade with him is a good idea.  But, considering the talks between the Celtics and his reps today, it’s looking more like Bass will return to the Celtics next season.

“We had a great conversation and we’ll continue to talk,” said Dutt. “Everything was very positive.”

Dutt said that six other NBA teams have expressed interest in his client, who at the age of 27 is entering the prime of his career. It helps that he excelled during the Celtics’ recent playoff run. He will be in demand, likely for more than mid-level (approximately $6 million) money.

“We understand that they care about him, but we have to look at all of our options,” said Dutt. “It’s our job to look at everything and make good decisions.”

I, for one, am all for a Bass return.  If he’s open to a multi-year-deal at the right price (say… 3 years, $18 -$20 million)… I think he can continue to be productive for Boston.

As for his playoff performance… it’s possible a team keying on him can be disruptive to his game, thus rendering a key piece to the Celtics puzzle ineffective.  It’s also possible that this learning experience, plus the tutelage of Doc Rivers and the Celtics veterans, could change that this upcoming postseason.

Stay tuned.  If I had to guess… Brandon Bass will be back in the Celtics fold soon.

I really don't understand bringing Bass back. You're really going to pay that much for a backup PF? See what he wants and try to get something out of him via sign and trade.

He'd be our starting PF, in this case.

Echoing what others are saying, I don't want bass as a starter and I don't want him back at all.

If it's 4 years and 25 million, you can pretty much guarantee Bass will be back.  There's no point in resigning KG and Ray and then hoping that JJJ or Sully can be the full-time back up 4.  There's also no way Boston gets an equivalent big for less than 7 mil a year.  Besides, that kind of contract is perfectly tradeable if one of the kids comes into camp and outplays Bass.

I'd like to package him with Ray for a sign and trade.

Ainge never pays above market value for Role players, see examples of Posey and Tony Allen.

So I think he walks

All stars on the bench Jajuan Johnson, and Jared Sullinger. Back to square one if Celtics don't retain Brandon Bass.

If DA plays his cards right, we should have the full mle to lure a free agent big man.  And I'd go for a center, not and undersized pf.

Quite simply, bass is not worth a long term deal as an undersized pf who relies on others to get him shots.
