Lou Williams as Celtics' Sixth Man?

I know everyone now wants Ray back in green now that Garnett has pledged to re-sign with the Celtics. But is it worth bringing back a 36 year old player coming off a surgery? As great as Ray Allen was playing before his injuries started derailing his season, he looked like a shell of himself come the postseason. With some caproom still left and Lou Williams a UFA, I think he could be a really a potent 6th man for us. Here's reasons the Celtics should sign him:

1. Age (25)
2. His ability to score at will, anywhere on the court
3. Has an excellent ability to get into the paint and draw free throws:  4.6 FTA last season compared to Mayo's 2.6 and Allen's 2.3
4. He's a stud in clutch situations
5. He's a combo guard that can reliably take some minutes off of both Rondo and AB
6. As callous as I sound, our big three aren't getting any younger, and we need some young legs in the backcourt.

He exercised his early termination option, meaning that he's seeking more than the 5.2 million he could have received from the Sixers. For 6-7 million, I'd think he'd be worth it. What do you guys think?

Depending on what he wants money wise, this makes more sense with Mayo if they sign him and resign Ray. Ray needs to be resigned no matter what, but Lou could come in and be a second unit spark. I doubt he leaves Philly in the end...

I guess it's just me, but I don't get the fascination with gunners around here: Crawford, Mayo, JR Smith, Lou Williams, Marshon Brooks.  Is Nick Young available?

If we sign another scoring guard like Lou or OJ Mayo, Ray will not be resigned. There just won't be enough minutes to go around.

I like very much Louis Williams's game, quick player, he creates his own shot and he has vision of the game great.
Louis learned of Iverson( learned of the best), he has very much talent, and when you see the game of Louis, you can see some similar movements of the great AI.

Louis would be a good fit for Boston, but I will love that Ray stay, Ray is Ray.

I would love to see Bradley and Williams on the floor together. Can Williams play point?

I'd take Williams over Dooling. Not over Ray though. I still want Ray.

I'm from the philly area, so I see a lot of LouWill
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of his game, and there are times where he shoots the 6ers out of games by himself. Sometimes he can be good, but I think I would pass on Lou. Mayo, however, i would be interested in.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
Meh.

I admire Williams scoring abilities, but he'll be commanding a ton of money and years and I don't know if that's where the C's should go.

We drafted Kris Joseph, why can't he be the scoring option off the bench. He's not as good as Lou Will, but he won't command as much. And for that matter, E'Twaun.

Yeah I agree.  Not sure any of those guys would be good fits, though williams is probably the best fit as he is both a decent shooter and a pretty good ball handler.

I rather the Celtics go after Chauncey Billups. Maybe sign and trade Ray to the Clips so Ray doesn't go to the Heat and the Celtics get a terrific combo guard. Chauncey could really get the Offense of the second unit rolling.

Rondo/ Billups/ Dooling
Bradley/ Billups/ Pietrus
Pierce/ Green/ Pietrus
Garnett/ Sullinger/ Green/ Johnson
Asik/ Garnett/ Sullinger/ Stiemsma

Then maybe a three way sign and trade. Mayo going to the Bulls, Bass going to Memphis and Asik coming here. Makes sense for each team but i don't even know if such a deal is possible. Just trying to think outside the box.

Here are Chaunceys stats from last year (20 games with the Clips)

30 mpg, 15.0 ppg, 4.0 apg, 2.5 rpg

I don't think we're going to have the money.  I expect we'll go over the cap, and will sign somebody using the MLE (which I don't expect Williams to accept.)

Chauncey does sound nice, especially because he has a good relationship with KG from their T-Wolves days. I don't know, just putting some options out there, especially since the Celtics were rumored to be chasing the likes of Jamal Crawford and O.J., and I see Lou Will fitting better than both of them. They say defense wins championships, but ranking 26th in the league in scoring surely doesn't help with that. With Pierce and Ray on the definite decline, I'm just saying it would be nice to have a young potent scorer to pair with Rondo. Lou Will, or O.J., I'd prefer over Ray at this point.

You're right it's nice to have offensive fire power. But i think guys like Ray and Chauncey will be more valubale to the Celtics come late in the playoffs. NBA is all about crunch time and Mayo and Williams make me nervous because they are unproven and if their shots arent hitting we could be in trouble (James Harden in the finals). Ray and Chauncey can be trusted in clutch situations. They've both won a title and know what it takes. I think that is a really under rated attribute in the league.
