I'm quite indifferent to Steamer. I think he should be a 5th to 6th option off the bench big for us, at best.

You think another team will make an offer?

I wouldn't be surprised if another team makes an offer.

As of this afternoon the Celtics were still negotiating with undrafted free agents to fill out the roster for their summer league team, which will play in leagues in Orlando and Las Vegas starting next weekend.

But several veteran free agents were added today, including power forward Othello Hunter, who played last season in China, and Jamar Smith, an NBADL veteran guard who played on a Celtics summer league team two years ago. Free agent guards Dionte Christmas and Jonathan Gibson have also signed on.

Sean Williams, the former Boston College center who was signed near the end of the season with the idea of playing for the Celtics this summer, will also be on the roster, though it’s unclear whether he will play in both Orlando and Las Vegas.

Some of these names sound familiar. Gibson's is the only one I haven't heard of. Anyone know anything about these guys?

why? because he played average while he had plantar fasciitis? The fact that he was playing hurt makes me like him more. are you the same guy who also thought kristc wasnt injured when he started to play bad?

I think that guy was me. Here's a quote from Danny Ainge: "He played great when he first got here, and then he hit a little slump. He wasn’t playing well for a while, and then he got hurt."

I know he had some knee problems, but everyone (Doc, Danny, etc) admitted that he didn't keep up his pace and went into a slump.

I'm also pretty indifferent on Steamer. That'd give us Melo, Sullinger, Johnson and Steamer on the roster. I'm not too excited about four unproven guys like that being 2/3 of our big rotation.

Does this mean Fab Melo won't even get a chance next year and ride the tail end of the bench even in blowouts?

I rather have Wilcox and Camby,  and then  Steamer if we can't afford it or can't get a better backup though a trade.

It would be best for the Celtics and Fab Melo if he spent most of his time with the Red Claws.  He's not NBA ready.  He may turn out to be a valuable player in a season or two, but this pick was for the future, and not next season, unless we're having a repeat of the 2006-2007 season.

I know the pick was for beyond this year still I'd like to see him get some time on the floor

I agree, and I'm pretty indifferent on him as well. Wouldn't mind him being on the bench, and wouldn't mind him playing for another team. He looked lost out there in the playoffs -- perhaps rookie playoff jitters.

As long as it is not ridiculous money, signing Stiemsma may be the sort of thing that encourages KG to come back.

I could see the Celtics fielding a team where Stiemsma is the nominal starter at center, plays 15-18 minutes per game, and sits during crunch time as KG plays center in a smaller lineup.

I love Stiemsma as a situational third-string big on a team-friendly contract.  I don't like him in a bigger role than that, though.

If Steimsma is anything more than the third center I'll lose my mind. Until he can figure out how to properly help on a pick and roll he should be playing under 10 minutes a night.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
There is another angle here; the period to match a qualifying offer drives down steamers asking price, and Danny Ainge is allowing the market to dictate his value.

Steamer wasnt going to get a 'knock your socks off' offer from anyone in the first place, now Danny has the upper hand. I'd be surprised if he wasn't signed to a very affordable 2-3 yr contract.

The Timberwolves cut Greg Stiemsma in training camp a few years ago. Now, they're pursuing him as a free agent.
