Question:  Is it possible to do double sign-and-trades?

In other words, Memphis is content with letting Mayo walk.  Boston is content with letting Bass walk.  Instead of renouncing the bird rights to either player, can both teams just work out a double sign-and-trade?  Boston signs and trades Bass while Memphis signs and trades Melo?  That legal?  Someone clarify.

If Legal, that would sidestep the need to "renounce" anyone for  cap space.

Ray Allen would be a very nice fit in Memphis. Sandwiched in between Conley and Gay in the starting lineup alongside their two power-based big men in Z-Bo and Marc Gasol. Tony Allen and Darrell Arthur as key bench players. That is a very nice top 7.

I really like that Ray/Gay/TA trio. I think they complement one another brilliantly. A Ray Allen for OJ Mayo sign and trade makes a lot of sense for Memphis.

Not so much Bass because they have Darrell Arthur there.

And yes, to answer your question, teams can make a trade like this. A double sign and trade. It is legal. The Shawn Marion (from Toronto to Dallas) and Hedo Turkoglu (Orlando to Toronto) trade from two-three years ago was that type of deal. Both guys where FAs and sign and traded in the same deal.

M.H. on the big show just said that a deal was agreed to to send Ray to Memphis for Mayo at the trade deadline but Mayo stepped in and said he did not want to play here.

For some reason I don't buy this.  Mayo has been on record saying that he wants to play with Rondo.  Before the trade deadline last year we seemed to be out of the hunt, but then again was Memphis ever really in the hunt either?  With a 60% Zach Randolph, I'd say 'no'.

Having said all of that, I can't say I want Mayo either... so meh.

It all depends on price.  Mayo would be a useful piece to the backcourt rotation, but it all depends on the dollars.  What I fear the most out of this offseason is that we end up burning through our cap space (or next summer's potential space) on guys like Mayo, or making a big long-term commitment to Brandon Bass.  There's "Joe Dumars risk" there (Ben Gordon + Charlie V); blowing your flexibility on players who are good, but not good enough to REALLY make a difference.

There is nothing preventing us from resigning Ray and offering the full MLE to OJ Mayo.  We could use the depth.

Mayo will get offered more than the MLE, and Ray Allen seems like he's ready to move on regardelss.  You sure aren't getting both of them if you're also penciling in Avery Bradley for 35MPG.

Quote
Under the 2011 CBA, the amount of the MLE and its duration depend on the team's cap status. The MLE is now $5 million for a duration of four years for teams that are over the cap either before or after the signing, but did not pay luxury tax in the previous season. Teams without cap room that paid tax in the previous season have an MLE of $3 million with a three-year duration. Teams with cap room, previously ineligible for the MLE, have a new MLE of $2.5 million with a two-year duration. The MLE is frozen at the stated levels through the 2012–13 season, after which it increases by 3% per season.[6]

No one of OJ Mayo quality is coming for 3 mil per year.

That is probably true, but you never know.  If he will accept $3M, we can sign both of them.  Hence the fact that nothing is "preventing" us.

That's precisely my recollection as well. I recall Mayo saying at the deadline he didn't want to play here.

Every summer, some players don't get the multi-year deal they're after and  play for short money.  JR Smith played for $2.5m last year.

If the big long term deal isn't out there for Mayo, he may sign on somewhere for one year and short money to build his value up for the following summer.
