Chris Mannix calls us one of the three biggest winners in the draft along with NO and 6'ers.

Boston addressed significant frontcourt needs by plucking plummeting Ohio State power forward Jared Sullinger at No. 21 and defensive-minded Syracuse center Fab Melo (more on him below) at No. 22. Sullinger is an interesting pick: a year ago he was considered a top-five talent, but a less than stellar sophomore year combined with concerns about a potentially chronic back injury had teams running away from him. Two concerns general managers often cite with Sullinger: a low motor and difficulties defending the pick and roll. Kevin Garnett, who assisted with the development of Kendrick Perkins and Glen Davis, could be a big help to Sullinger -- if KG decides to return.

Boston took a flyer on Melo's Syracuse teammate, Kris Joseph, an athletic small forward, at No. 51".

He especially thinks Fab Melo for the Cs is one of the best fits in the draft.

Best Fit

• Fab Melo -- No one is saying the 22-year old Melo is ready to play right away. But his defense and shot blocking skills are undeniable and with a little work and by adding a little bulk to his 7-foot, 255-pound frame, Melo has starting center potential. And for the Celtics, which shifted Kevin Garnett to center the second half of last season, that's a position they badly needed to fill."

I like his thinking. For what it's worth Stephen A. likes the Melo pick, but thinks Sully's game doesn't translate well to the NBA.

I agree with Mannix, Fab Melo was a need, and a really good fit. I also think it was a KG pick, meaning, it was a pick that can get KG to be able to slide back over to PF if Fab Melo comes in right away and shows his defense is NBA caliber and his offensive game will develop more.

Stephen A Smith is an idiot. His big baby/Sullinger comparisons are laughable.

  • Let them hate, as long as they fear
Please explain a little better how drafting a player with a known bulging disk qualifies as a "smart" draft???????????
And someday in the midst of time,
When they ask you if you knew me
Remember that you were a friend of mine

Don't think we get Sullinger if he didn't have back issues. He goes lottery.

Is it really so hard to figure out? He's a top 5-10 talent. They have done their homework and don't think its going to be an issue. At #21 you are lucky to find a rotation guy and this guy would be a solid starter for a long time. Doc had the same issue throughout a 13yr career and the doctors believe he will be fine. Its no guarantee, but what is? The issue isn't a surprise, they have weighed the risks. If the doctors are right, you get a really good player for a cheap pick. Why is that so hard to understand?

The biggest advantage of our draft is we got 3 guys who can spell our two oldest players, at least in the regular season.  Sullinger and Melo can take some minutes from KG, and if Joseph is good enough to stick he can spell Pierce.  That's the single biggest short-term advantage of the picks.

I thought it was a steal for the Celts. The Hornets, Cavs and Sixers got some nice picks too.

Yea we prly shouldnt have drafted sully he was no good in college, he scored like 17 pts a game and only grabbed 9 rebounds agame, that bulging disc and being undersized are really holding him back................................really!?! smh

As far as Fab.....why not? He is big and could develop into something BIG(thanks NBA). Yea we passed on PJ3 but we prly have jeff green and JJJ and therfore IMO no need to take a another gamble on PJ3

It was a gamble. That's why he was there at #21. O/w he goes top 10.

Celtics fan for life.

I'm confused why people keep saying that these 2 picks will help KG?

Doc does not play rookies!!!!!!

Also my wife has back problems, disk in her upper back near her neck. Doctors said she can have surgery but surgery can cause more problems just as easy as it can fix them. This is why most people do not have the surgery. Of course she is a CPA so she can live with it, being 270 lbs getting beat up in the NBA night in and night out, not as easy.

Risky pick, hope it works, still think he's a bad fit for the team either way.

doc doesn't play rookies who aren't ready to play. he played delonte, rondo, TA...even big al (who just kept getting hurt). i have no doubt he would have played moore and JJJ more had there been a real offseason and they had time to get acclimated to the team (since both were 4 year players vs. 1 year players who may need even more time to learn the system). they both played like deers in headlights when they got burn last year...which is why they didn't play that much once we got our rotations set. the idea that doc doesn't play young guys is flat-out wrong...he plays young guys who are ready to play.

Everyone hates Sullinger for a report of a bulging disk, yet everyone wants to trade the farm for Dwight Howard who just had surgery for a buldging disk in his lower back. Also, we got Sullinger , a lottery talent in a loaded draft, dirt cheap. Go figure.

He's from Brazil an was a soccer player most of his life.  Picked up B-Ball only 5 years ago.  Despite being new to the game, he apparently already has NBA level skills with regard to sho-blocking and some aspects of defense.

So in Melo we have a huge guy who is athletically skilled enough to play at a high level despite only 5 years playing and being coached.

Seems like a risk worth taking.
